Goal-based approach safety objectives

Goal-based methods are preferable to prescriptive approaches. They allow risk to be objectively justified and explained in the form of a safety case. 

When the first edition of Values-Based Safety Process was written in 1993, my goal was to illustrate a proven approach to applying behavioral techniques to improve safety in the workplace. Since that time the field and interest in behavioral safety have greatly expanded, as has our experience. With that in mind, I set out with three primary objectives for the second edition bring the methodology and terminology into alignment with current practice, address a variety of special topics, and provide case studies that more adequately represent current practices and application. 

Training for the sake of documentation is a waste of time and money. Training should be purposeful and goal or objective driven. An organized approach to on-the-job safety and health will yield the proper ammunition to determine your real training needs. These needs should be based on accidents/incidents, identified hazards, hazard/accident prevention initiatives, and input from your workforce. You may then tailor training to meet the company s needs and those of the workers.
