To determine the absolute configuration of optically active organic compounds, there are two nonempirical methods. One is the Bijvoet method in the X-ray crystallographic structure analysis, which is based on the anomalous dispersion effect of heavy atoms. - The X-ray Bijvoet method has been extensively applied to various chiral organic compounds since Bijvoet first succeeded in determination of the absolute stereochemistry of tartaric acid in 1951. The second method is a newer one based on the circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Harada and Nakanishi have developed the CD dibenzoate chirality rule, a powerful method for determination of the absolute configuration of glycols, which was later generalized as the CD exciton chirality method. 8 The absolute stereochemistry of various natural products has been determined by application of this nonempirical method. [Pg.35]

The base used in the formulation of suppositories can often affect the rate of decomposition of the active ingredients. Aspirin decomposes in several polyoxyethylene glycols which are often incorporated into suppository bases. Degradation was shown to be due in part to transesterification, giving the decomposition products salicylic acid and acetylated polyethylene glycol. The rate of decomposition, which followed pseudo first-order kinetics, was considerably greater than when a fatty base such as cocoa butter was used. Separations of complex FAME mixtures, with chain lengths up to 24 carbons and up to six double bonds, including aU co3 and co6 acids, can be achieved on capillary columns of polyethylene glycol or Carbowax type columns (usually of dimensions 25-30 m long, 0.25 mm i.d., and a film thickness of 0.2 xm) as recommended in the AOCS official method Ce lb-89 (American Oil Chemists Society, 2005).
