Natural iron oxide pigments are mostly used as inexpensive marine coatings or in coatings with a glue, oil, or lime base. They are also employed to color cement, artificial stone, and wallpaper. Ocher and sienna pigments are used in the production of crayons, drawing pastels, and chalks [3.5].

The two prime sources of statistics relating to fats and oils are The Fats and Oils Situation of the Department of Agriculture and Canned Fish and By-Products of the Fish and Wildlife Service. The latter gives production of oils obtained from fish and marine mammals together with such by-products as kelp products, agar, and glue. The Fats and Oils Situation is rich in comment, news, and statistics. 

As in the processing of vegetable oils the extraction of fats and oils from animal sources can be regarded as a sequence of unit operations (Figure 9.1.10). In modern economies milk and butter are predominantly used as dairy products (besides e.g. casein paints and glues) whereas tallow and marine oils are used for food as well as for industrial purposes.

Urea is used as a cattle feed supplement where it is a cheap source of protein. It is used both in prill form (microprill at 0,2/0.4 mm diameter) and as a liquid in a mixture of urea ( 75% solution), molasses, and phosphoric acid. It is the feed material for melamine plastic and for various glues. The glues are either urea-formaldehyde or urea-melamine-formaldehyde. TTie latter is waterproof and is used for marine plywood. 

Unsaturated polyesters (UPs) have been used extensively in the reinforced plastics industry in the manufacture of products for transportation, construction and marine applications. They are also used for coatings, finishes, lacquers, cements and glues...

However, due to the considerable commercial pressure by the aluminium companies, many aeroplanes, by that time, were essentially wooden aircraft built out of metal . The use of U/F glues, therefore, was initially confined to marine applications. With the outbreak of the Second World War and the potential shortages envisaged for aluminium, the industry turned back to the use of wood and to U/F adhesives. 

The term biological adhesive includes the adhesive secretion used by organisms for attachment, construction, obstruction, defense, and predation (Smith and Callow 2006 Graham 2005). These natural glues are produced in marine and other wet environments by fish, holothurians, mollusks, arthropods, worms, bacteria, algae or fungi, and on land by amphibians, spiders, insects, etc. 

Although not of the BWP grade, urea/ formaldehyde adhesive is fairly close to it and has been used in the building of boats from marine plywood. It is easy to mix and use giving a white glue line.
