Now since the configuration of carbon atoms 3, 4 and 5 of glucose and fructose art identical, it folhjws that glucosazone and fructosazone are identical in all respects. The osazone is formed however more rapidly from fructose than from glucose, and this difference in rate of formation may be used to distinguish the two sugars, provided the reactions are carried out under strictly parallel conditions (pp. 138, 338). 

Saccharic acid. Use the filtrate A) from the above oxidation of lactose or, alternatively, employ the product obtained by evaporating 10 g. of glucose with 100 ml. of nitric acid, sp. gr. 1 15, until a syrupy residue remains and then dissolving in 30 ml. of water. Exactly neutralise at the boiling point with a concentrated solution of potassium carbonate, acidify with acetic acid, and concentrate again to a thick syrup. Upon the addition of 50 per cent, acetic acid, acid potassium saccharate sepa rates out. Filter at the pump and recrystaUise from a small quantity of hot water to remove the attendant oxahc acid. It is necessary to isolate the saccharic acid as the acid potassium salt since the acid is very soluble in water. The purity may be confirmed by conversion into the silver salt (Section 111,103) and determination of the silver content by ignition. 

The U.S. market for dmgs to control blood glucose totals about 1 x 10 , equally divided between insulin and all other antidiabetic dmgs (33). Insulin sales ate expected to grow by about 10% annually, whereas the antidiabetic dmg market as a whole is expected to shrink by about 3%. The blood glucose monitoring market totals about 7.5 x 10 in the United States and is expected to grow at a rate of 10% annually. 

A compound which is a good choice for an artificial electron relay is one which can reach the reduced FADH2 active site, undergo fast electron transfer, and then transport the electrons to the electrodes as rapidly as possible. A typical fermentation medium for penicillin production contains lactose, com steep Hquot, and calcium carbonate (3,153,154). In most industrial processes the carbohydrate source, glucose, beet molasses, or lactose, is continuously added to the fermentation. The rate of glucose addition must be carefully monitored, by pH or rate of oxygen depletion, because the synthesis of penicillin is markedly reduced in the presence of excess glucose.
