Glass laboratory glassware

Pressure rupture of even a small pieee of equipment may result in a serious explosion generating missiles travelling at high veloeity. This is an important eonsideration when using laboratory glassware or industrial glass equipment and pipework. 

The effects of corrosion on other properties need similar direct assessment in many cases. However, in the absence of accepted standard tests the BS, DIN, ISO tests for laboratory glassware are often used. At the present time, the British Standard BS 3473 Methods of testing and classification of the chemical resistance of glass used in the production of laboratory glassware is being re-issued in six parts, of which the first five parts are identical to recently revised ISO test procedures. Laboratory glassware made from this glass is available. It is a borosilicate glass manufactured by Wood Bros. Glass Co. The linear expansion coefficient (0-400°Q is 3-2 x 10 .

Experiments are performed in special laboratory ware made from thin or thick laboratory glass. Thin glassware must be chemically and thermally stable. Ware in which reactions are performed with heating is made from heat-resistant Pyrex glass and quartz. 

For simple distillations a Claisen flask (see, for example, Quickfit and Quartz Ltd cataloque of interchangeable laboratory glassware, Kontes Glass Co, Vineland, New Jersey, cat.no TG-15, Normschiff, Wertheim, Germany, Embell Scientific, Murwillumbah, NSW 2484, Australia) is often used. This flask is, essentially, a round-bottomed flask to the neck of which is joined another neck carrying a side arm. This second neck is sometimes extended so as to form a Vigreux column. 

Resin Elution Concentration. The first three ethyl ether elutions were combined into a 500-mL glass bottle with a Teflon cap liner. The bottles and all the laboratory glassware used in the sample analysis were cleaned with 6.0 N HC1, acetone, and hexane and then baked at 200 °C to remove the solvent. The combined elutions were brought to the laboratory for evaporative concentration and analysis. 

The glass plates should be cleaned with a laboratory glassware cleaner such as RBS-35 (Pierce), rinsed well, and dried.
