Another example that generates some public fear is the widespread use of monitors or visual display terminals (VDTs) in office automation. Compared to early analog models, current digital models have lower emission levels. The radiation from monitors is just one potential hazard related to their use. Glare, reflected glare, size of images and print and other factors may contribute to vision and other worker issues. 

Apart from physical discomfort and irritation, poor lighting can induce errors in reading valve labels or instruments on the control panel. Direct or reflected glare can be another problem in many work situations. Having to avoid the glare may constitute another task the worker has to perform, which can divert him or her from the primary job responsibility.

Despite my best intentions, I am aware of the deficiencies and limitations that still exist in this volume. I have tried to correct the numerous minor errors in the first edition which undoubtedly reflected my lax proof reading. In this respect I wish to express my sincere thanks to the numerous friends and colleagues who took the time to comment on the strengths and deficiencies of the first edition. Hopefully, the second edition has remedied the more glaring errors and omissions. In producing the second edition, my intention has been to keep the volume as concise as possible without compromising on the accuracy of the contents.
