API GL-4. Lubricants intended for axles with spiral bevel gears operating under moderate to severe conditions of speed and load or axles with hypoid gears operating under moderate speeds and loads. These oils may be used in selected manual transmissions and transaxle applications, where API MT-1 lubricants are unsuitable. 

Due to the high sliding contact encountered in enclosed worm and hypoid gears, lubricant selection for these should be considered separately from lubrication of other types of enclosed gears. 

Extreme-Pressure (EP) Oils. EP oik are usually high-quaUty petroleum-based oik containing sulfur- and phosphorus-based extreme-pressure additives.These products are especially helpful when high-load conditions exkt and are a must in the lubrication of enclosed hypoid gears. 

Corrosive Oils. Several services depend in part on the corrosiveness of an oil at least in certain temperature ranges. Such oils as extreme-pressure lubricants for hypoid or heavy-duty gears, and cutting oils require the addition of sulfur, chlorine, or compounds of these. Suitable corrosion tests and special performance tests are required for each service.
