Typical compositions for several oxygen-blown coal gasification products are shown in Table 9-4. 

The major challenge in gasification is to avoid the formation of tars, which have a tendency to clog filters and condense in end-pipelines. Tars are considered as the condensable fraction of the organic gasification products, and consist mainly of different aromatic hydrocarbons with benzene as the main species. For removal of tars three types of catalysts have been widely investigated alkali metal salts, alkaline earth metal oxides and supported metallic oxides.

Sasol (Suid-Afrikaans Sintetiese Olie) in South Africa has one of the largest coal gasification production operations in the world with the three plants.1 One plant produces only chemicals and the other plants produce both liquid fuels and chemical feedstocks from coal. In 1994, Sasol s total ammonia capacity was over 500,000 tons per year.54... 

Methanol also may be produced from wood gas so wood could be a future raw material for making methanol, especially for use as an additive to gasoline for internal combustion engines. Thus, reforming the gasification products obtained at high temperatures is a second method for the production of methanol from wood. This is in contrast to the older method (destructive distillation), which directly yields small quantities of methanol at lower temperatures as mentioned above. 

The gasification product gas composition, particularly the H2/CO ratio, can be further adjusted by reforming and shift chemistry. Additional hydrogen is formed when CO reacts with excess water vapor according to the water-gas shift reaction.

The recycling of PVC by hydrothermal techniques is described, in which PVC is thermally converted in a steam atmosphere into hydrogen chloride, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and some gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons. Whilst gasification with only steam is an endothermic reaction, partial combustion of PVC by the addition of small amounts of air, enables autothermic operation of the process to take place. This work deals with the effects of the addition of air on the gasification products, and compares an endothermic operation with autothermic and exothermic operation. 11 refs. 

The quality of the gasification products are related to the material input and will differ according to the technologies used. Tar formation can be a major problem in some cases. For a well-defined material input, the choice of the technology will depend on the products (gas or liquids) valorization method.
