In early 1900s, biomass gasification processes were also widely used to manufacture synthetic gases for production of fuels, chemicals, and hydrogen. During World War II, over 1 million air-blown gasifiers were built to produce synthetic gas from wood and charcoal to power vehicles and to generate steam and electricity.3... [Pg.3]

Direct production of hydrogen from gasification is the simplest route. Gasification is a two-step process in which the solid feedstock is thermochemically converted to a low- or medium-energy-content gas. Natural gas contains 35 MJ/Nm3. Air-blown biomass gasification results in approximately 5 MJ/m3 oxygen-blown in 15 MJ/m3. [Pg.135]

For the first decades, all roadmaps show a focus on fossil-based hydrogen production options, mainly onsite and decentral steam methane reformers (SMR), electro-lysers and hydrogen as a by-product from the chemical industry. In some regions, hydrogen is also produced to a certain extend by nuclear, electrolysis, biomass and waste gasification. Later on, with a significant increase of hydrogen, the production... [Pg.263]
