In early 1900s, biomass gasification processes were also widely used to manufacture synthetic gases for production of fuels, chemicals, and hydrogen. During World War II, over 1 million air-blown gasifiers were built to produce synthetic gas from wood and charcoal to power vehicles and to generate steam and electricity.3... 

Direct production of hydrogen from gasification is the simplest route. Gasification is a two-step process in which the solid feedstock is thermochemically converted to a low- or medium-energy-content gas. Natural gas contains 35 MJ/Nm3. Air-blown biomass gasification results in approximately 5 MJ/m3 oxygen-blown in 15 MJ/m3. 

For the first decades, all roadmaps show a focus on fossil-based hydrogen production options, mainly onsite and decentral steam methane reformers (SMR), electro-lysers and hydrogen as a by-product from the chemical industry.
