Gain thin films

A concept gaining support is a hybrid approach to making thick crystalline silicon efficient in thin layers. Although conventional crystalline silicon cells have gone from 400—600-p.m thick to 200—300-p.m, thin-film crystalline silicon cells have reached 10% efficiency while being only 10-p.m thick. 

Cellulose acetate, the earhest reverse osmosis membrane, is still widely used. Asymmetric polyamide and thin-film composites of polyamide and several other polymers have also made gains in recent years whereas polysulfone is the most practical membrane material in ultrafiltration appHcations. 

It has now gained acceptance as an impressed current anode for cathodic protection and has been in use for this purpose since 1971. The anode consists of a thin film of valve and precious metal oxides baked onto a titanium substrate and when first developed was given the proprietary name dimensionally stable anode , sometimes shortened to DSA. Developments on the composition of the oxide film have taken place since Beer s patent, and this type of anode is now marketed under a number of different trade names.

Recent considerations of metal UPD on semiconductor surfaces suggest that light-assisted processes gain much significance in the relevant technology. The use of photoinduced UPD as an approach for the preparation of compounds and composite semiconductors either in thin films (layered structures) or in particulate suspensions is a challenging issue that will be outlined promptly.

All these waveguiding films lack one important feature that would be necessary for true lasing They do not have a resonator for optical feedback that would lock the optical modes traveling in the gain direction. The thin-film waveguide confines the optical modes in one direction (in the vertical), but in the other two dimensions the modes have translational and rotational symmetry. The incorporation of resonator structures into the thin films in order to get true organic solid-state lasers will be described next. 

In addition to silicon wafers and thin films, other photovoltaic technologies are gaining interest and importance such as concentrating PV technologies, in combination with very high-efficiency cells. 

An important difference between luminescent conjugated polymers and laser dyes is that the former still exhibit strong optical gain in the solid state. This property means that luminescent conjugated polymers can be used to produce stimulated emission in thin films of these materials. 

The volatile metal-containing precursors which satisfy the ALD criteria fall into four main categories (i) halides, (ii) y0-diketonate complexes, (iii) alkoxides, and (iv) true organometallics, viz. metal alkyls and cyclopentadienyl-type compounds (Fig. 3). Also amido complexes have recently gained attention as possible ALD precursors. Occasionally other compounds have been used as ALD precursors for thin films, for instance, metal nitrates, carboxy-lates and isocyanates [17,18].
