Fungus-resistance tests are used to determine the reaction of adhesives to several species of fungi under high humidity and a warm environment in the presence of inorganic salts. Testing for fungus resistance is more appropriate for exposed adhesives as in printed-wiring assemblies than for hermetically sealed devices or modules. ASTM G 22, Resistance of Plastics to Bacteria The test protocol is similar to G 21 specimens are inoculated (usually) with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic soil bacterium that is a hazard to immune-compromised persons. The zone of inhibition is sometimes determined. This should not be combined with fungus resistance testing, as Pseudomonas can metabolize a variety of fungi (instead of the biocide-containing nutrient).

Property enhancement by acetylation has been frequently reported over the years in other reconstituted wood products such as flakeboards, particleboards, and fiberboards [8,9,11,12,59-64]. Table 16 shows the laboratory decay test of low-density acetylated particleboards made from perishable albizzia wood. They were resistant to attack by Tyromyces palustris (brown rot), Coriolus versicolor (white rot), and Chaetomium globosum (soft rot) above 12% WPG. These acetylated boards with 20% WPG also exhibited an improved resistance to attack by the destructive Formosan termite, Coptotermes formosanus, in the laboratory. However, their performance was unsatisfactory in the wet tropics with a higher hazard of termite attack. High resistance to fungal and bacterial attack in acetylated southern pine and aspen flakeboards was evidenced in laboratory and fungus cellar tests [12]. 

Notes of the author Most of the composite deck board materials show good fungus resistance when tested in accord with the ASTM D 1413 procedure, against standard white- and brown-rot fungi. In fact, I have never seen any ASTM D 1413 test data that would have shown a problem with any tested commercial composite deck board.

In additional tests, the suppressor activities of pectins in the intact host/pathogen-interaction were investigated by injecting genetically resistant plants with pectic substances prior to inoculation with the rust fungus. Infected leaves were harvested, cleared, and stained with Calcofluor one week after inoculation, and fungal growth was assessed under the UV-epifluorescence microscope.
