Funds, health care

The proceeding chapters give wimess of an overwhelming scientific development. Antiviral intervention has become a standard, and the worldwide availability of this innovation is perceived as a humanitarian matter of course with a value of its own. However, such an important therapy progress has to be seen in competition with other allocations of scarce funds. Health care resources are Umited - in one country more than in another, but in principle funds invested to antiretroviral intervention will not be available for prevention of HIV/AIDS or for the cure of other diseases. This fundamental scarcity calls for a rational utilization of existing resources and a scientific calculation of the socio-economic impact of antiretroviral intervention. [Pg.348]

Most citizens in developed European nations feel that their health services are world beating. This is a myth the politicians who are responsible for delivering tax-funded health care systems encourage us to believe. In the UK, at least, it is far from true. [Pg.393]

In addition to the economic objective of savings for public health care funds, the regulation of the Spanish pharmaceutical sector pursues other goals, both economic and social. Thus, from a social welfare viewpoint, it is important to bear in mind the repercussions of regulation on the health status of the... [Pg.201]

To be sure, funds may go to some projects defined on racial grounds, but the purpose is not to favor those groups as such but to use that category as the best means to serve the compelling purpose of meeting the health care needs of all citizens. Because some health care differences are race based, race must be taken into account to meet the health care needs of those persons. [Pg.294]

It seems clear that government as a funding agency and physicians as clinical providers may take race into account when racial correlations with health status or health care are directly relevant. In many clinical situations moral and legal duties to take race into account in order to respond properly to the patient s health needs may also exist, either because of state action or because of state laws banning racial and ethnic discrimination in public accommodations, which include hospitals and physician offices. Three situations in which a physician may have a duty to recognize racial correlations and order a different test or therapy as a result are discussed below. [Pg.304]

Good (morning/afternoon/evening). This is (FIRST LAST NAME) calling for the University of Louisville School of Medicine. We are conducting a national survey funded by the National Institutes of Health about important health care issues, and your household was randomly selected to represent people living in your area. I would like to invite you to participate. [Pg.333]

While the funded mandate would cover all insured persons, the voucher provision would cover uninsured children and adults, who would receive immunizations from health care providers oftheir choice, conditional onthe provider s being willing to accept the vouchers as payment in full. The value of the voucher would equal the fixed-dollar subsidy paid to health plans. Participating providers would collect the voucher at the time of service and submit it to the government for payment. The committee considered alternative approaches to the voucher system - from an electronic card system to simply reimbursing providers who submit a bill for each vaccination administered. The committee did not endorse any particular approach, although the hxed-dollar subsidy appears to have been preferred. [Pg.111]

Cutler and Kadiyala s (2003) estimates of life expectancy benefits associated with improved cardiovascular treatment suggest a high value of pharmaceutical products relative to costs. An analysis at the national level would provide confirmation that the value of pharmaceuticals is not limited to cardiovascular disease. Here we performed such an analysis for Canada, where the public funding of health care has led to extensive debate over its value and, more specifically, over the value of pharmaceutical products whose rate of growth within the health care budget continues to increase. [Pg.235]

The growth of clinical economics has proceeded rapidly as health policymakers have faced a series of decisions about funding new clinical therapies in an era of increasingly constrained health care resources. Assessments of new therapies include an accounting of the resources required for the new therapy, the... [Pg.37]
