On March 2, 2004, the Canadian Medical Association Journal reported on a 1998 internal GSK document that had been leaked to it (Kondro et al., 2004). The memorandum advised staff at the international drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to withhold clinical trial finds in 1998 that indicated the antidepressant paroxetine... had no beneficial effect in treating adolescents. ... [Pg.402]

Spitzer s report revealed that internal GSK documents discussed how to spin negative studies into positive ones in an effort to manage the dissemination of these data. As originally disclosed in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, this management included publishing a positive article about an essentially negative report (Study 329). [Pg.404]

Figure 8 Simplified diagram of a signaling cascade that involves NE, BDNF, and CREB after NE acts on the postsynaptic fi-noradrenergic receptor. NE couples to a G protein (Gas), which stimulates the production of cAMP from adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This reaction is catalyzed by adenylate cyclase (AC). cAMP activates protein kinase A (PKA). Inside the cell, PKA phosphorylates (P) the CREB protein, which binds upstream from specific regions of genes and regulates their expression. BDNF is one target of cAMP signaling pathways in the brain. CRE, cyclic AMP regulatory element ER, endoplasmic reticulum, [reprinted from Reference 76 with permission of the author and the publisher, Canadian Medical Association]. Despite Janey Canuck s dire warnings and the marihuana "menace" uncovered by the Canadian Medical Association, and League of Nations, there were only twenty-five convictions in Canada for marihuana possession between 1930 and 1946. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (Canada s counterpart to the FBI), note that "prior to 1962, isolated cases of cannabis use were encountered, but generally in connection with entertainers and visitors from the United States. Although marihuana arrests were effected sporadically in the middle 40s, its use on a more frequent basis appeared in Montreal only in 1962, in Toronto in 1963 and in Vancouver in 1965."... [Pg.115]

The Canadian Pharmaceutical Association (CPhA) was founded in September 1907 as a national body for the profession of pharmacy in Canada. Its involvement in publishing began early in its history with the assumption of responsibility for the Canadian Formulary in 1929. The first edition of the Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties (CPS) was publi.shed in 1960 and continues today, along with a number of other well-respected health care publications including Nonprescription Drug Reference for Health Professionals, Compendium of Nonprescription Products, Therapeutic Choices, and Herbs Everyday Reference for Health Professionals. The latter is published jointly with the Canadian Medical Association. [Pg.112]

In 1951, the American College of Surgeons were joined by the American College of Physicians, the American Hospital Association, the American Medical Association, and the Canadian Medical Association to create JCAHO as it is known today. The Canadian Medical Association has since withdrawn from JCAHO however, they continue a process similiar to the current JCAHO. The governing body is made up of 28 members with a diverse background in health care, business, and public policy. Members include nurses, physicians, consumers. [Pg.493]
