Office supplies and office communication have been revolutionized by the introduction of the 3M product Post-it Notes in 1980. The temporary adhesive of these self-sticking notes actually was initially rejected as a glue by its inventor, 3M chemist Spencer Silver, because of its impermanence. However, 3M researcher Art Fry found a niche for the adhesive—as an adhesive for a temporary bookmark for his choir hymnal. Key to the performance of these removable, repositional adhesive products is the application of the adhesive to the backing of a note sheet via tiny microspheres rather than a continuous film. With an average particle diameter of 25-45 fim, the microsphere adhesives form a discontinuous layer that assists in retaining the ability to re-apply the note to new surfaces. Traditional adhesive tape contains particles of smaller dimension (typically 0.1 to 2.0 pm) that coalesce to form a continuous film that limits removal. ... [Pg.214]

The other major uses of acrylic latexes are in textile finishing (e.g., stain and wrinkle resistance), adhesives, and floor polishes and waxes. Adhesives are used in many applications, including pressure-sensitive tapes, contact adhesives, and construction adhesives for carpeting and floor tiles. Peelable labels and stamps probably got their start with the Post-it note, invented by Spencer Silver and Art Fry at 3M company many years ago. [Pg.129]

Due to the need to use case-by-case analysis the Kister studies [136, 137] focused on item 1. The data evaluated came from published reports by Fractionation Research (FRI) and Separation Research Program (SRP) at the University of Texas, taken from commercial size equipment rather than laboratory research columns. The FRI data includes No. 2 and No. 2.5 Nutter random rings packing, aind Norton s Intalox 2T structured packing, each considered currently state-of-the-art or close to it, while the sieve and valve trays were of FRI s latest designs, plus Nutter s proprietary valve trays, all using 24-in. tray spacing. [Pg.273]

An enormous amount of study has been made to evaluate the performance of many contacting devices, using a variety of test mixtures. Only a portion of the results have been published in the open literature, on a random basis with unification through handbooks, texts, and review papers. Fractionation Research, Inc. (FRI), an industry-sponsored organization for conducting commercial-scale tests of devices under carefully controlled experimental distillation or absorption conditions, has been a leader, performing thousands of experiments. - An updated state-of-the-art review of equipment types and characteristics has been published by FRI and collaborators. ... [Pg.1008]

When he invented this adhesive, Silver had no specific ideas for its use, so he spread the word of his discovery to his fellow employees at 3M to see if anyone had an application for it. In addition, over the next several years development was carried out to improve the adhesive s properties. It was not until 1974 that the idea for Post-it Notes popped up. One Sunday Art Fry, a chemical engineer for 3M, was singing in his church choir when he became annoyed that the bookmark in his hymnal kept falling out. He thought to himself that it would be nice if the bookmark were sticky enough to stay in place but not so sticky that it couldn t be moved. Luckily, he remembered Silver s glue—and the Post-it Note was born. [Pg.7]

A visitor to the United States from Japan tried several seafoods. Most of them were deep, deep fried denatured protein once called fish a blackened red fish it was nothing but charcoal. The conclusion he drew was that the cuisine of the West is overcooked. Japanese dishes seem to have no art of cooking at all. Although sashimi and sushi use uncooked fish meat, they are one of the most difficult dishes to prepare among Japanese cuisines. A lot of skills are hidden behind the no-cook recipes. This is really an art, and definitely a different kind of art than that found in Western cooking. [Pg.6]
