California contains the largest formation of diatomite in the United States the Monterey Formation extends from Point Arena in Mendocino County in the north to San Onofre in the south (7). The most extensive deposit is near Lompoc, Santa Barbara County, and is of marine origin. A freshwater deposit is being mined near Burney, Shasta County. Other important deposits (not mined as of this writing) are located in Monterey, Fresno, Inyo, Kem, Orange, San Bemadino, San Joaquin, Sonoma, and San Luis Obispo counties.

By the late 1990s, it was clear that only the big automakers could make the electric car really happen. But, these were the same companies that had disdained electric cars earlier. GM once sued California in the U.S. District Court in Fresno to block imposition of the state s zero-emissions rules. These regulations would require automakers to build thousands of electric vehicles using rechargeable storage battery technology. Field surv have confirmed oxidant injury to ponderosa pine and associated species at numerous locations in the Sierra Nevada foothills east and southeast of Fresno. Oxidant measurements at ground stations and by instrumented aircraft show late-aftemoon peaks of transported oxidant on the western slopes of the Sierras. Limited measurements by instrumented aircraft suggest the development of a layer of oxidant approaching the forested mountain slopes between 610 and 1,829 m during the late afternoon. A very weak inversion or isothermal layer may serve as a reservoir of oxidant, which is advected to the mountain slope in the southern coastal air basin, as suggested by Edinger. Considerable concern has been registered about air quality in the Lake Tahoe basin, where local development may cause adverse oxidant concentrations. ...

As part of EPA s National Runoff Program in Fresno, California, the soil water and groundwater at depths 26 m beneath five urban runoff retention/recharge basins were monitored during a 2-year study (Nightingale 1987). The results indicated that there were no significant downward movements of nickel with the recharge water. 

A 10- to 15-gpm EXXFLOW unit and an EXXPRESS unit producing 50 gal of filter cake per day were installed to remove pesticides, heavy metals, and oils from rinse liquid produced by EMC Corporation in Fresno, California. Capital costs were approximately 175,000. Equipment installation cost 12,000 (D11314U, p. 43).

Dicldnson and associates (1 ) reported that the Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District of Fresno County, Calif., stopped a large population of Aedea mosquitoes from biting as soon as the clouds produced by an insecticide fog applicator had passed the field. This machine was also used to treat 160 acres of irrigated pasture land that had been considered untreatable. After 24 hours no adult mosquitoes were observed.
