Foster innovation

In many ways, the challenge of allocating resources to and creating new lines of business internally is similar to the challenge of fostering innovation through R D (see Bower, 1970 Helfat, 1988). However, the purpose of R D is to sponsor innovations the purpose of a corporate venture is to create a new business inside the firm (Block MacMillan, 1993). Most new business units are innovative, but... 

Regulation may also indirectly stimulate innovation. Often, firms respond creatively to crises, and to the extent that regulation poses crisis conditions it may foster innovative responses. This appears to be the case particularly in older, non-innovative firms which, prior to regulation, felt no need to innovate. 

Share credit for research and development success with the business unit. Better participation and new ideas can occur by providing appropriate incentives and rewards. Methods and practices that motivate all members of the team will foster innovation. 

This is a company internal objective that is also driven by external factors, between which social pressure and legislation from one side and market competiveness driven by innovation from the other side are the driving elements. Owing to global competiveness, the effectiveness of these driving forces to foster innovation is related to the capacity to introduce in the product value elements that account for how the product (and related chain of production) impact on the environment, as well risks, are minimized. Chapter 5 discusses these aspects and the modalities to quantify sustainability of chemical production. 

There have been a growing number of state initiatives to foster innovation and stimulate economic growth. One successful example is the Ben Franklin Technology Partners (http //www.benfranklin.org/), which is a statewide network in Pennsylvania that operates four regional centers located throughout the state.

The last component of the DDSC is the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). In this area, as it can be seen in Fig. 7.9, both Uruguay and USA currently have a basic push operation (level 1), which can be translated as a lack of an organization culture that foster innovation. Brazil is already in an optimized push performance (level 2) regarding PLM. For future performance, all operations target to become an optimized Push-Pull (level 3), where PLM is implemented for both new product introduction and portfolio optimization. 

In spite of these reservations, it may be anphasized that when appropriately applied, rapid sensory profiling techniques are powerful tools for clever use of sensory analysis. Many examples and testimonies of successful uses of these methods, both in industry and in acadania, are presented throughout this book. This wiU hopefully spark the interest of students in sensory programmes, as well as that of sensory professionals, sensory scientists and, more generally, all users of sensory data. May this book help them in their daily work, provide than with some solutions and contribute to fostering innovation in sensory science. 

This research is reievant, since it offers perspectives for companies on how to internalize user knowledge to foster innovation and on how to manage embedded lead users who show different underlying cognitive and motivational structures than nonuser employees. 

So, can engineering education develop teamwork resulting in better intrinsic motivation that in turn can foster innovation and entrepreneurship needed to keep pace with current realities ...
