Food digestion

Extracellular peptidases are relatively easy to isolate and are, therefore, well-studied. In higher organisms, they perform a variety of different functions such as food digestion, control of blood pressure and blood clotting, and complement activation, among others. A few examples are compiled in Table 2.2. [Pg.36]

The serine proteases cleave amide (peptide) bonds in peptides and have a wide variety of functions, including food digestion, blood clotting, and hormone production. They feature as one of the best-understood groups of enzymes as far as mechanism of action is concerned. We are able to ascribe a function to many of the amino acid residues in the active site, and we also understand how they determine the specificity of the various enzymes in the group. [Pg.521]

The absorptive state continues for 2-4 hours after food intake. As a result of food digestion, the plasma levels of glucose, amino acids, and fats (triacylglycerols) temporarily increase. [Pg.308]

The answer is D. This student is still in the fed or absorptive state within 1 hour of a meal, so elevated levels of many nutrients derived from food digestion would be observed in her blood. This would include all items in the list except glucagon. High nutrient levels in the blood evoke increased insulin secretion from the beta cells and suppression of glucagon secretion by the alpha cells of the islets of Langerhans. Therefore, blood levels of glucagon would be decreased relative to other nutritional states. [Pg.68]

Food accumulation add Jiao Mai Ya (deep-fried Hordei fructus germinatus), Jiao Shen Qu (deep-fried Massa medicata fermentata) and Jiao Shan Zha (deep-fried Crataegi fructus) to promote food digestion. [Pg.183]

Second, herbs that regulate the Qi movement and water metabolism in the Middle-Jiao, remove dampness and phlegm and thereby enhance the ability of the herbs that promote food digestion are selected. [Pg.227]

Third, herbs that promote food digestion, purge the accumulation and regulate the Qi should be selected to assist the herbs that dissolve, dry and eliminate phlegm. [Pg.236]

As with insects—of which there are numerous species that are damaging to life processes (crop infestation, human discomfort, etc.), but also many that are beneficial (honeybee, lady beetle, etc.)—so are there both helpful and harmful bacteria. Bacteria play a major and constructive role in numerous processes that support life, such as food digestion and synthesis of vitamins. They serve as a basis for manufacturing antibiotics and as tools of genetic research. This list easily could be expanded a thousandfold. Some of the lcsscr-known examples arc cited here. [Pg.169]

There is a truism athletes face often without realizing it. You are what you absorb, not just what you eat. When you eat whole /complete protein source food such as round steak, your teeth grind up the fibers into smaller pieces. If you do not chew your food, digestive enzymes /juices fail to access enough area of these fibers to fully break them down. Less area exposed, less digestion, less amino acids to supply growth and repair. [Pg.206]

Interestingly, the highest TAC was found for human feces. TAC of feces was correlated with the uptake of coffee and red wine and may be important in preventing oxidative damage to the intestines during food digestion (Gl). [Pg.246]

Both the stomach and the small intestine elaborate peptide hormones into the bloodstream, which is crucial in initiating food digestion. The most important hormones of this class are gastrin, secretin, and cholecystokinin. Their structures are displayed in Figure 16.13. [Pg.417]

The fourth section deals with various aspects Digestion, Absorption, and Nutritional Biochemistry. The chapter Obesity considers current problems with respect to the ever-increasing incidence of imbalance between energy intake and utilization. Key problems of undemutrition are discussed in the chapters Protein-Energy Malnutrition and Vitamin A Deficiency in Children. The chapters Lactose Intolerance, Pancreatic Insufficiency, and Abetalipoproteinemia focus on the biochemical processes underlying food digestion and absorption. Calcium Deficiency Rickets, Vitamin B12 Deficiency, and Hemochromatosis provide discussions of absorption and utilization of vitamin D, vitamin B12, and iron, respectively. [Pg.382]

Normally, food and chyme are phase-separated systems, but only the first steps have been taken towards understanding the phase behaviour of food polymers in food processing and practically nothing in food digestion. The effects of thermodynamic compatibility of mucopolysaccharides, food fibers and exopolysaccharides of different bacteria species on selection of microflora in the intestine and colon have not been studied yet. The mechanisms of bacterial colonization of the intestine and peristaltic transportation of chyme also remain unstudied. [Pg.38]

A key physiologic response when the body is exposed to foreign substances is the production of fluids at the site of exposure to help dilute, solubilize, or physically clear the substances. For example, inhalation of particulates leads to an increase in the amount of mucous and other fluids produced in the respiratory tract. Ingestion of food or other substances triggers the production of increased stomach acids to maintain the pH optimal for food digestion in the stomach. [Pg.4814]
