Food additives risk reduction

Conversely, Christoplos (2006) has argued that although scientifically credible, disaster risk reduction initiatives can be incompatible with local and global political imperatives after disasters. Informing the humanitarian focus on addressing acute human suffering, these political drivers also inform the immediate priorities for local politicians, donors and disaster affected people, who need to get people out of tents and into houses and off food aid and into jobs (Christoplos 2006). In addition, he noted that the 2004 tsunami decimated many of the local... [Pg.1307]

Cyanidin is the most common anthocyanin in foods. In addition, anthocyanins are stabilized by the formation of complexes with other flavonoids (co-pigmentation). In the United States, the daily anthocyanin consumption is estimated at about 200 mg. Several promising studies have reported that consumption of anthocyanin-rich foods is associated with reductions of the risks of cancers - and atherosclerosis and with preventive effects against age-related neuronal and behavioral declines. These beneficial effects of anthocyanins might be related to their reported biological actions such as modulators of immune response and as antioxidants. Knowledge of anthocyanin bioavailability and metabolism is thus essential to better understand their positive health effects. [Pg.165]

By definition, a nutraceutical (derived from the term nutritional pharmaceutical ) is a foodstuff (fortified food or dietary supplement) that is held to provide health or medical benefits in addition to its basic nutritional value [1], Nutraceuticals derived from botanicals deliver a concentrated form of presumed bioactive agents from plants that are not generally part of the food supply. The term nutraceutical has no regulatory definition. Similarly, functional foods, as defined by the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), are foods that by virtue of physiologically active food components, provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition [2], For the purposes of this review, these two terms will be differentiated by the form in which they are consumed. Nutraceuticals refers to dietary supplements most often found in pill or capsule form functional foods are ingested as part of a normal food pattern. Both are intended to provide beneficial effects beyond their nutritional value, and contribute to an improved state of health and/or reduction of risk of disease. [Pg.186]

The most obvious impact of mycotoxins is the inability to sell crops for human or animal food due to contamination with even relatively low levels of certain mycotoxins. In certain developing countries where there is less regulation or monitoring of human and animal exposure to toxins, there are risks of higher human health costs and animal death. Additional losses can be from a number of unseen problems such as reduction in birth rate in certain animals, decline in milk production by dairy cattle and egg production in poultry, loss of... [Pg.173]
