Complications from radical prostatectomy include blood loss, stricture formation, incontinence, lymphocele, fistula formation, anesthetic risk, and impotence. Nerve-sparing radical... 

Complications of Crohn s disease may involve the intestinal tract or organs unrelated to it. Small-bowel stricture and subsequent obstruction is a complication that may require surgery. Fistula formation is common and occurs much more frequently than with ulcerative colitis. 

Crohn s disease was one of the first disorders for which MAT and in particular anticytokine therapy have been approved both in the United States (in 1998) and in Europe (1999). The chimeric anti-TNFa mAh infliximab has shown efficacy in several clinical trials in Crohn s disease, including reduced fistula formation (151-153). The effects may last for several months even after a single infusion. 

Complications Acute liver failure, arterioportal fistula formation, oesophageal varices (15) and pulmonary hypertension have been reported as complications. In most cases, the cause of death is anorexia with tumour cachexia, accompanied by signs of circulatory and renal failure. Occasionally, there is intraperitoneal haemorrhage, portal vein thrombosis (138,146) and tumour rupture with formation of haemorrhagic ascites. (121)... 

Uncommon complications include perforation and aortic-esophageal fistula formation. 

Leg edema as a consequence of lymph node involvement, thrombophlebitis, fistula formation, weight loss, and pain in the lower back or radiating down the legs are indicative of widespread disease. 

IBD is divided into two major subtypes ulcerative colitis and Crohn s disease. Ulcerative colitis is characterized by confluent mucosal inflammation of the colon starting at the anal verge and extending proximally for a variable extent (e.g., proctitis, left-sided cohtis, or pancolitis). Crohn s disease, by contrast, is characterized by transmnral inflammation of any part of the GI tract bnt most commonly the area adjacent to the ileocecal valve. The inflammation in Crohn s disease is not necessarily confluent, frequently leaving skip areas of relatively normal mucosa. The transmural nature of the inflammation may lead to fibrosis and strictures or, alternatively, fistula formation. 

Yet the authors feel the use of high viscous cohesive viscoelastics to be appropriate in inhibiting the threat of corneal injury. Prevention of hypotony and recognition of potential causes (e.g., outward fistula-formation) are of superior significance. 

Colon carcinoma and diverticulitis both affect mainly the distal colon of aging patients in Western countries both can present with perforation,obstruc-tion or fistula formation. Differentiation obviously has critical prognostic importance. Chronic symptoms of weight loss or bleeding should raise suspi-don for carcinoma. In carcinomas usually a circumscribed thickening of the colon is seen. In some cases it is not possible to differentiate diverticulitis from a perforated tumour by imaging methods. 

Research has proposed utilization of AM with buccal mucosa for graft in penile ventral augmentation urethroplasty. The epithelial nature of AM may prevent restenosis and urethral fistula formation by maintaining adequate coverage over the mucosa graft site. 

Traumatic injury to the vagina is usually caused by childbirth and is diagnosed clinically in the majority of cases. MRl has a diagnostic role in excluding or evaluating fistula formation after trauma. 

The major complications of metallic stenting include hemorrhage, migration, tumor ingrowth, tumor overgrowth, severe pain, perforation, and fistula formation (Saxon et al. 1994). 

Fistulas are usually caused by local tumor invasion but may be caused by the stent itself. Differentiating between the two causes is impossible. Acunas et al. (1996) reported fistula formation in 5% of 59 patients treated with metallic stents. Most series report a lower incidence of fistula formation. 

In our opinion the 20-22 mm Enteral WaUstent seems currently the most suitable stent because of its high longitudinal flexibility with sufficient self-expanding force and the capability of transen-doscopic placement. The use of covered stents with the current available designs seems limited to sealing fistula formations at this time. 

The creation of a phallus has been associated with multiple surgical problems, and efforts are ongoing to improve the function and appearance. The older, insensate phallus shrivelled, and efforts to provide stiffness were associated with fistula formation and cutaneous erosions. Generally the initial desire of female-to-male transsexuals is not a functional phallus, but to void while standing in the men s bathroom to elude this closure. Most patients express only a desire for a good appearance in swimsuits, while only some transsexuals would like to be able to use the phallus sexually.

Hemorrhage is a known complication in lung RFA, and results from the positioning of the device rather than from the ablative procedure (Fig. 5.1.9). While the reported percentage of infection (< 1%) and bronchopleural fistula formation (< 1%) in the literature (Dupuy et al. 2002) accords with our experience, the occurrence of pneumothorax, reported as 20% (Dupuy et al. 2002 Vaughn et al. 2002), and the incidence of hemorrhage, reported as < 1%, seem to be underestimates.
