Bronchopleural fistula

Hemorrhage is a known complication in lung RFA, and results from the positioning of the device rather than from the ablative procedure (Fig. 5.1.9). While the reported percentage of infection (< 1%) and bronchopleural fistula formation (< 1%) in the literature (Dupuy et al. 2002) accords with our experience, the occurrence of pneumothorax, reported as 20% (Dupuy et al. 2002 Vaughn et al. 2002), and the incidence of hemorrhage, reported as < 1%, seem to be underestimates. 

Bronchopleural fistula has been reported as a complication after lung RFA (Jungraithmayr et al. 2005), we have observed and documented it after the ablation of sheep lung (Fig. 5.1.13).
