Satisfactory performance of the fireproofing material over its expected lifetime depends on the user s and the applier s knowledge of materials and application techniques and on continuing inspection by qualified personnel. Specifically, once a fireproofing system has been chosen, it is imperative that personnel involved in each phase of the project be familiar with the relevant aspects of the manufacturer s requirements and specifications. 

Periodic inspection and testing maximizes the useful life of the fireproofing system. The manufacturer or applier may be invited to participate in the inspection. An inspection and testing program should include the following steps ... 

Selectively remove small sections of fireproofing to examine conditions at the face of the substrate and the surface of reinforcing wire. Repair the inspection area. 

Inspect to make sure that the fireproofing hasn t been removed for maintenance and not replaced. 

In evident areas of bond failure, fireproofing should be removed and the substrate should be thoroughly cleaned and properly primed before new material is applied. If surface coating is required to prevent moisture from penetrating, it should be renewed at intervals recommended by the manufacturer. The previously listed inspections should be completed prior to renewal of coating so that defects are not hidden by the coating. 

Review the rest of the mechanical integrity program to ensure all critical equipment, piping, and pumps have acceptable integrity and an established inspection program with guidelines for repair. Include inspection and repair of fireproof insulation in the program. (By March 2002)... 

A parachute sometimes carries residual fire which cannot be seen, and as it is carried by the wind so far it can be more dangerous. Parachutes of course can be so constructed that they are fireproof and so after careful testing are useable. Commercial shells cannot be inspected by users, and so parachutes are unavoidably disliked. There is also the problem that in a daylight display there is the danger of children running after the parachute in a street of busy traffic.

Records of preshift and on-shift inspections must be kept and made available to miners (as required for coal and metal/nonmetal mines in the 1977 Mine Act section 103(h)). There are other record-keeping requirements for these inspections as weU. In underground coal mines, the record must be kept in a book labeled Preshift, On-shift, and Daily Report, which must be secured in a fireproof repository. In surface coal mines, the daily report must be countersigned by the surface mine foreman, the assistant superintendent of the mine, the superintendent of the mine, or a person designated by the operator as responsible for health and safety at the mine. In metal/nonmetal mines, each working place shall be examined once each shift. Records of preshift and on-shift examinations must be kept for 1 year (coal/underground 75.1802, 75.1808 coal/surface 77.1713 metal/nonmetal 55/56/57.18-2). Record keeping of these examinations allows miners to be aware of them.
