Fire Fighting Capabilities

Check fire-fighting capability and access for fire appliances. Liaison with emergency services. [Pg.486]

A general application of loss prevention practices is considered prudent both by insurers and petroleum companies, so overall, all facilities are required to achieve the corporate protection standards. In fact the premium of insurance is normally based on the level of risk for the facility after an insurance engineer has "surveyed" the facility. Isolated cases may appear where less fixed protection systems are provided in place of manual fire fighting capabilities, however the general level of overall loss prevention level or risk is maintained. Insurers will also always make recommendations for loss prevention improvements where they feel the protection levels are substandard and the risk high. Where they feel the risk is too high, they may refuse to underwrite certain layers of insurance or charge substantial additional premiums for reinsurance requirements. [Pg.17]

Improve the emergency response procedures, training, and drills, to help the fire brigade members respect the potential hazards of an incident and avoid unnecessary exposure, particularly when fire fighting capabilities are below par. (Plans complete by November 2001)... [Pg.378]

Services. A municipal fire department can be thought of as a utility. It is an important consideration in site selection that manual fire fighting capabilities are evaluated. A fire station needs to be situated in the area of the site. The first three minutes of a fire are the most critical. Even with all the advances in fixed fire protection capabilities, there are times it comes down to trained people performing critical functions to put a fire out. [Pg.386]

The Fire and Rescue Service s own fire fighting capability. [Pg.321]

The ship s safety is substantially affected by many factors including ship owner management quality, crew operation quality, enhanced survey programme, degree of machinery redundancy, fire-fighting capability, navigation equipment level, corrosion control and preventive maintenance policy. In order to identify the salient factors and interactions that cause excessive variations, a trial application of Taguchi methods is performed here to optimise each factor to attain the optimal safety for the ship. [Pg.261]

Average fire-fighting capability is adequate for the system. Factor C2 is selected. [Pg.265]

Materials which (in themselves) are capable of detonation or of explosive decomposition or of explosive reaction but which require a strong initiating source or which must be heated under confinement before initiation. Includes materials which are sensitive to thermal or mechanical shock at elevated temperatures and pressures or which react explosively with water without requiring heat or confinement. Fire fighting should be done from an explosive resistant location. [Pg.10]

SSCs important to safety shall be designed and located, subject to compliance with other safety requirements, so as to minimize the effects of fires and explosions. A fire hazard analysis and an explosion hazard analysis shall be carried out for the research reactor facility to determine the necessary ratings of the fire barriers and means of passive protection and physical separation against fires and explosions. The design shall include provisions to prevent or limit the formation of explosive atmospheres. Fire detection systems and fire fighting systems of the necessary capability shall be provided. [Pg.43]

Fire fighting systems shall be automatically initiated where necessary. Fire fighting systems shall be designed and located so as to ensure that their rupture or spurious or inadvertent operation would not significantly impair the capability of SSCs important to safety, and would not simultaneously affect redundant safety groups and thereby render ineffective the measures taken to comply with the single failure criterion (see paras 6.36-6.38). [Pg.43]

FRRSs must be capable of being opened and closed manually by the fire service in the direction of the approach when positioned across fire fighting routes. Power operated FRRSs must be provided with a Declaration of Conformity and following installation should be CE labelled in accordance with the EC Machinery Directive. Power operated FRRSs also fall within the scope of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 1992. Where an FRRS is held in the open position there should be controlled descent when the automatic selfclosing device operates. [Pg.184]

In addition, many underground mines have installed a mine-wide monitoring system that can detect incipient fires (generally with CO sensors), including spontaneous combustion in remote or isolated gob (goaf) areas. Further, a reliable fire-fighting system is installed, maintained, and checked periodically for proper functioning and capability. [Pg.258]

A fire hazard analysis of the plant shall be carried out to determine the necessary rating of the fire barriers, and fire detection and fire fighting systems of the necessary capability shall be provided. [Pg.15]
