Filtration, of water

Water (particulate and dissolved lead) Filtration of water through a 0.45 pm membrane filter (dissolved lead) particulate material dissolved by wet ashing (insoluble ICP/AES (EPA Method 200.7) 42 pg/L 94-125 EPA 1983a... [Pg.452]

Arce et al. [39] developed a flow injection analysis (F1A) system (Fig. 5.3) for online filtration of water samples prior to CE analysis. They also constructed a pump-driven unit for extraction and filtration of soil samples combined with CE in an online mode (automated sample transfer between pre-CE sample preparation step and the CE) [40]. The method was precise and four times faster than conventional methods of sample preparation with an off-line unit. Blood samples are centrifuged immediately to remove red blood cells and the serum is stored as discussed above. Sometimes, urine samples also contain precipitates which are removed by centrifuge. [Pg.118]

Cells do have other transport options. Very small molecules can filter through the various channel proteins in the membrane. Drugs tend to be too large to pass by this method. The filtration of water is specifically called osmosis. Endocytosis is another method by which molecules may enter a cell. Endocytosis comes in many forms, all of which involve the indentation of a section of cell membrane that pinches off to form a new internal vesicle in the cell (Scheme 3.2). Once the cell breaks down the vesicle, the contents are released... [Pg.54]

Membrane polymeric materials for separation applications are made of polyamide, polypropylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, polysulfone, polyethersulfone, cellulose acetate, cellulose diacetate, polystyrene resins cross-linked with divinylbenzene, and others (see Section 2.9) [59-61], The use of polyamide membrane filters is suggested for particle-removing filtration of water, aqueous solutions and solvents, as well as for the sterile filtration of liquids. The polysulfone and polyethersulfone membranes are widely applied in the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries for the purification of enzymes and peptides. Cellulose acetate membrane filters are hydrophilic, and consequently, are suitable as a filtering membrane for aqueous and alcoholic media. [Pg.73]

For soil/sediment samples the results of these analyses are reported based on the wet weight of the sample. However, use of the SDS apparatus allows the water content of a sample to be determined from the same aliquot of sample that is also extracted for analysis. The amount of water evolved from the sample during extraction is used to approximate the percent solids content of the sample. The percent solids data may be employed by the data user to approximate the dry weight concentrations. The percent solids determination does not apply to the extraction of particulates from the filtration of water samples or to the extraction of fly ash samples which are treated with an HC1 solution prior to extraction. [Pg.464]

Extracts of the aqueous filtrate of water samples are in methylene chloride which is concentrated to approximately 10 mL by K-D or rotary evaporator prior to combining with the toluene extract of the particulates. If using K-D, the methylene chloride can be concentrated in a water bath instead of a heating mantle. [Pg.469]

The bile acid-dependent fraction (250 ml) is formed chiefly in the periportal acinus, (s. tab 3.2) There is a linear relationship between bile acid excretion and bile flow. Osmotic filtration of water and inorganic ions is proportionally elevated (dependent upon bile salt concentration). Other secretory mechanisms or pump systems may also be activated by bile acids. [Pg.37]

The filtration experiments were conducted in cross-flow mode at pressure 0.25-0.5 MPa in the system. In that pressure range for filtration of water, permeate flux was 26-85 L/m. AU process parameters were recorded with data acquisition system periodically the samples of permeate and retentate were collected for chemical analysis. [Pg.863]

Most solutions contain colloidal particles, e.g. dust, that do not cause visible turbidity and that sustain multiple filtrations and centrifugations. With low initial concentrations of the adsorbate of interest (< 10 mol dm ) a substantial fraction of the adsorbate is associated with these colloids rather than homogeneously distributed in solution. Uptake of adsorbate from solution in such systems occurs partially by attachment of colloidal particles originally present in solution (with the adsorbate of interest sorbed by these particles) to the surface of the adsorbent. Then the adsorbate is slowly redistributed. This aspect of sorption has been widely discussed (e.g. [2]) with respect to radionuclides (radiocolloids), but this phenomenon is not limited to radioactive dements. Filtration of water used in the experiments can partially reduce but not completely eliminate this problem. With... [Pg.312]

When adsorption is finished, one washes carbon with 15 liters of distilled water until one cannot detect any more, in the filtrate, of water soluble impurities, and then one subjects this coal to an elution with 50 liters of methanol added with 10% of concentrated ammonia. The eluate is concentrated to 1 liter under 20 torr at 30° and the acid carboxylic, which crystallized at the end of twenty-four hours, is dried under 1 torr at 80°. The recovery is 45.3 grams is 91% of the theoretical quantity. [Pg.121]

The use of filtration of water in modem water plants is another illustration of the adoption of one of nature s methods of purifying water. When water passes through a considerable thickness of fine... [Pg.338]

The last equations play the roles of rheological correlations. They give us an ability to obtain a closed system of equations for filtration consolidation of clays at the first stage. At the second stage m=0, we have to specify the law of the filtration in such a system, because we have ignored the filtration of water between clay particles until this moment (at the first stage we consider that for the q Darcy s Law is operating). Let us use the correlation for case m=0 m, = /3-a-0)0, = (17)... [Pg.447]

Aggregates are used in a variety of applications relating to drainage of water from land and structures, and to filtration of water and effluent. The key factors are the permeability of the aggregate, ease of construction, stability and durability and these are governed by the particle size distribution and the strength/durabil-ity of the aggregate [8.1]. [Pg.78]
