Fillers float

A first indication that polyolefins are present can be obtained from a simple density measurement. Contrary to the behavior of other plastics, polyolefins without fillers float on water. The only other plastics that float on water are foamed plastics or those containing foaming agents. [Pg.57]

JM Mine was moored, pear-shaped, contact mine which had no horns. The jolt received by the pendulum firing mechanism, when a ship struck the mine, closed an electrical contact and fired the detonator. - The mine was filled with ca 110 lbs of a HE ( ) (pp 44-45, Fig 18) Pomegranate Mine was a Vickers antenna mine purchased before WWII. It was spherical, 41 inches in diam, with six chemical horns on the upper hemisphere and two addnl ones welded to the lower hemisphere. An upper antenna and float and/or lower antenna were secured to the mine. No data for HE filler (pp 44 45, Fig 19) Type 3 Mine was the first Japanese attempt to use influence mines, copied from German S Mine. Their cylindrical A1 cases were either 7 or 11 feet long and 21 inches in diam. No data for HE used and the description of the mine given in Ref 1, p 46 is hard to understand Mark 2 Mod 1 Explosive Hook was actually a device for mine sweeping rather than a mine. [Pg.490]

The choice of a filler depends on the number of bottle sizes being considered for use on it. For example, if 3 1 PET bottles are to be filled, a 126 mm pitch between filling valves is required. If only small bottles up to 500 ml are to be filled, then a 70 mm pitch will suffice. This has a direct effect on the size of the filler and its footprint on the factory floor. Unless the filler bowl level is kept within tightly controlled limits, pressure head variations will affect the rate of flow into containers. Systems such as that shown in Figure 7.15 need to be employed. Wherever possible there should be minimal contact between any instrumentation and the product. Conventional float valves should be avoided and simple capacitance probes, which are easily cleanable but small and very effective, should be used. It is not uncommon in older fillers to only have one float valve. This often gives rise to filler bowl flooding, which may lead to inconsistent fill level and poor counter-pressurisation of the container pre-filling. [Pg.173]

Tunnels require the belt speed to be specified and coatrolled. When linked with other fixed-speed equipment such as washers and fillers, changes in tunnel belt speed often become self-evident. Temperature monitoring should reflect the coolest zone in the tunnel and include a reference sensor related to the temperature conditions recorded in the product during validation. Floating probes in the product are not usual (for reasons of practicality). [Pg.121]

Since the density of plastics highly depends on the presence of fillers or other additives, this property is far from being a characteristic feature. Unfilled polyolefines (polyethylene and polypropylene), a number of elastomers (natural rubber and silicone rubber), and foamed plastics come within the rare category of polymers which float on water. Some fluoropolymers exhibit a density around or greater than 2 g/cvo (see also Table 3.3). [Pg.84]

A slide bearing to be used in a water treatment plant is to be made from a molded UHMWPE compound containing powdered brass filler (25% by weight). The brass powder has been added to improve heat transfer created by the friction from a rotating shaft. Assuming the brass powder has a density of 8.59 g/cc, what would be the estimated density of the molded part What would be the maximum amount of brass powder that could be added if the design specifies the UHMWPE compound must be able to float on water ... [Pg.290]

These salts of long-chain carboxylic acids are soaps, and this saponification reaction is the way most soaps are manufactured. Fats and oils are boiled in aqueous sodium hydroxide until hydrolysis is complete. Adding sodium chloride to the mixture then causes the soap to precipitate. (After the soap has been separated, glycerol can be isolated from the aqueous phase by distillation.) Crude soaps are usually purified by several reprecipitations. Perfumes can be added if a toilet soap is the desired product. Sand, sodium carbonate, and other fillers can be added to make a scouring soap, and air can be blown into the molten soap if the manufacturer wants to market a soap that floats. [Pg.1033]
