Health Safety. PET fibers pose no health risk to humans or animals. Eibers have been used extensively iu textiles with no adverse physiological effects from prolonged skin contact. PET has been approved by the U.S. Eood and Dmg Administration for food packagiug and botties. PET is considered biologically iuert and has been widely used iu medical iaserts such as vascular implants and artificial blood vessels, artificial bone, and eye sutures (19). Other polyester homopolymers including polylactide and polyglycoHde are used iu resorbable sutures (19,47). [Pg.333]

In addition to carbon and glass fibers ia composites, aramid and polyimide fibers are also used ia conjunction with epoxy resias. Safety requirements by the U.S. Federal Aeronautics Administration (FAA) have led to the development of flame- and heat-resistant seals and stmctural components ia civiUan aircraft cabias. Wool blend fabrics containing aramids, poly(phenylene sulfide), EDF, and other inherently flame-resistant fibers and fabrics containing only these highly heat- and flame-resistant fibers are the types most frequently used ia these appHcations. [Pg.72]

In addition, many grades of paper and paperboard are used in direct or indirect contact with foods. Thus, many mills only use paper chemicals that have been cleared for use by the U.S. Pood and Dmg Administration (PDA) (3), so that it is not necessary to segregate machine broke (off-grade paper and edge clippings that are reclaimed for their fiber value) and white water. Most of the chemicals discussed in this article are approved by the PDA for use in paper and paperboard that are intended for appHcations in food processing and packaging. However, there are various restrictions on both the specific functional uses and amounts of paper chemical additives which can be used, so the PDA status should be confirmed by the suppHer before use. [Pg.15]

Flammability. PhenoHcs have inherently low flammabiHty and relatively low smoke generation. For this reason they are widely used in mass transit, tiinnel-building, and mining. Fiber glass-reinforced phenoHc composites are capable of attaining the 1990 U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations for total heat release and peak heat release for aircraft interior facings (1,70). [Pg.302]

Surgical sutures are sterile, flexible strands used to close wounds or to tie off tubular structures such as blood vessels. Made of natural or synthetic fiber and usually attached to a needle, they are available ia monofilament or multifilament forms. Sutures are classified by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) (1) as either absorbable or nonabsorbable. The USP also categorizes sutures according to size (diameter) and Hsts certain performance requirements. Sutures are regulated by the Food and Dmg Administration (FDA) as medical devices under the Food, Dmg, and Cosmetics (FDC) Act of 1938, the Medical Device Act of 1976, and the Medical Device Reporting regulation of 1995. [Pg.265]

LAXATIVES. The nurse records file results of administration on the patient s chart. If excessive bowel movements or severe prolonged diarrhea occur or if file laxative is ineffective, the nurse notifies file primary health care provider. If a laxative is ordered for constipation, the nurse encourages a liberal fluid intake and an increase in foods high in fiber to prevent a repeat of this problem. [Pg.482]

Release of tetracycUne hydrochloride from PCL fibers was evaluated as a means of controlled administration to periodontal pockets (69). Only small amounts of the drug were released rapidly in vitro or in vivo, and poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) gave superior results. Because Fickian diffusion of an ionic hydrochloride salt in a UpophiUc polymer is unlikely, and because PCL and EVA have essentially identical Fickian permeabilities, we attribute this result to leaching of the charged salt by a mechanism similar to release of proteins from EVA (73). Poly-e-caprolactone pellets have been found unsuitable for the release of methylene blue, another ionic species (74,75). In this case, blending PCL with polyvinyl alcohol (75% hydrolyzed) increased the release rate. [Pg.88]

Open-labeled and randomized controlled trial data support some evidence for the efficacy of intermittent long-term administration of rifaximin in patients with symptomatic diverticular disease. A therapeutic gain of approximately 30% compared to fiber supplementation only can be expected with respect to obtaining symptomatic relief after 1 year of treatment (table 1). Considering the safety and tolerability of rifaximin, this drug can be recommended for patients with symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease. [Pg.112]

There is some evidence that long-term cyclic administration of rifaximin combined with fiber supplementation is effective for inducing symptomatic relief in patients with uncomplicated diverticular disease of the colon. A therapeutic gain of approximately 30% compared to fiber supplementation only can be expected. The drug is well tolerated and no relevant side effects have been reported. Symptoms attributed to diverticula (abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, disturbance of bowel habits) are nonspecific symptoms and are also features of irritable bowel syndrome. It has been suggested that irritable bowel syndrome and diverticular disease of the colon may coexist in many people and when bowel symptoms occur with diverticulosis coli, they may be due to a coexistent irritable bowel rather to the diverticula themselves [47, 48]. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that many patients with symptomatic diverticular disease show co-... [Pg.113]

Some types of mushrooms contain moderate quantities of good-quality protein and are good sources of dietary fiber, vitamins C and B, and minerals (Breene 1990). Extensive clinical studies have demonstrated that some species have medicinal and therapeutic value, by injection or oral administration, in the prevention/treatment of... [Pg.33]
