Fertilization receptors

Mice that are homozygous for a disrupted Bx or B2 receptor gene are healthy, fertile and normotensive. In Bx-deficient mice, bacterial lipopolysaccharide-induced hypotension is diminished and the recruitment of polymorphonuclear leukocytes to the sites of tissue injury is impaired, and the animals show signs of hypoalgesia. Deletion of the B2 gene in mice leads to salt-sensitive hypertension and altered nociception. [Pg.675]

As illustrated in Table 43-5, the discovery of the nuclear receptor superfamily has led to an important understanding of how a variety of metabolites and xenobi-otics regulate gene expression and thus the metabolism, detoxification, and elimination of normal body products and exogenous agents such as pharmaceuticals. Not surprisingly, this area is a fertile field for investigation of new therapeutic interventions. [Pg.471]

With respect to soils, a receptor is thus characterized as a specific combination of land use (e g., Forest ecosystem types, agricultural crops) and soil type. The critical loads can be calculated for both agricultural soils (grassland, arable land) with HM inputs with deposition, fertilizers, and wastes, and non-agricultural (forest and steppe) soils, where atmospheric deposition is the only input to the system. [Pg.60]

Scientists studying a common mutation in the LDL receptor gene have inserted the defective gene into fertilized murine ova. The altered ova are implanted in a firster mother and the progeny are used to study the effects of the mutant allele. The mice produced in this procedure would be referred to as ... [Pg.90]

Luteinizing honnone is critical to male fertility because it stimulates testicular Leydig cells to produce the testosterone that maintains secondary male sex characteristics. The LH receptor mediates these functions by activating adenylyl cyclase via (90). [Pg.123]
