Electrostatic spraying is used in shops to coat conductive objects. It is very useful for odd-shaped objects such as wire fence, cables, and piping. An electrostatic potential of 60,000 volts on the object attracts oppositely-charged paint particles the spray can wrap around and coat the side of the object opposite to the spray gun. This technique produces very uniform finishes and has the least paint loss of the three methods. However, it is slow, requires expensive equipment, produces only thin coats, and is sensitive to wind currents. [Pg.366]

In an effort to test the system and to generate preliminary data on the toxicity of munition compounds to reptiles, acute oral toxicity studies on TNT, DNT, and RDX were conducted using Western fence lizards (S. occidentalis) [60], All three compounds were administered via gavage in a com oil vehicle. Table 7.1 shows the median lethal dose (LD50) for lizards orally exposed to these common munition compounds. Based on these data, RDX is relatively more toxic to fence lizards than TNT and DNT. Males appear more sensitive to RDX than females, while females are more sensitive to DNT than males, although generalizations on the relative sensitivity of males and females should be approached with caution. Overall, these data suggest that RDX is most toxic, and DNT and TNT are less toxic. [Pg.168]

Perimeter fences that block sidewalks must contain adequate signs directing pedestrian traffic to a safe walkway. Place primary signs on the perimeter fence. To our knowledge, only one study utilizing a radiation source in the field was conducted to evaluate the effects of exclusively low levels of ionizing radiation on an ecosystem. This interesting study was developed by Dr. Norman R. French at the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission s Nevada Test Site. A 20-acre circular area, enclosed with a rodent-proof fence, was irradiated by a 33,000-Ci Cs source located in the center of the circular area (French, 1964). According to a survey conducted by Mather and Hart (1954) on a north-south transect from Cleveland almost to Atlanta, plank fences were seen with greater frequency in the Inner Bluegrass than any other segment, and rock fences seen nowhere else.
