Much of the information in this section is taken from Reference 4. Standards play such a dominant role in everyday activities that one tends to forget that they exist. One may use a radio alarm clock, the accuracy of which is expressed through the use of standards traceable to the National Bureau of Standards (NBS). By international agreement, the time is referenced to the zero time meridian in Greenwich, outside of London. The radio operates on a frequency assigned by the Federal Communications Commission. 

A mobile telephone (cell phone) is defined in this case as a mobile commrmication device defined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as a cellular phone. It does not include two-way or citizen band radios. However, it does include push-to-talk phones as these devices are classified as cell phones by the FCC and they require the driver to hold it while it is in operation. 

In cooperation with the Federal Communication Commission (ECC) Emergency Alert System, NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) serves as a network of radio stations that broadcast continuous weather information direct from NWS offices. The NWR network consists of 850 transmitters that cover all 50 states, adjacent coastal waters, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and the US Pacific Territories. 

Regulation. Radio transmission is regulated and closely monitored by government agencies. In the United States, it is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCG). The FGG is responsible for regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable in aU fifty states, the District of Golmnbia, and U.S. possessions. 

The wireless network consists of the wireless (radio) channels connecting the cell phone to the base station. Once a cell phone signal reaches the base station, it travels through copper or fiber to the central office, where it enters the public switched telephone network, or the Internet. The frequencies used for this transmission are extremely valuable, and electronic auctions conducted by the Federal Communications Commission bring in millions of dollars to the U.S. Treasury.
