Fatty acids surfactants from

The traditional major source for the nonionic surfactant industry is fatty acid triglycerides from both animal and vegetable sources as the saturated or unsaturated acids. The saturated acids include lauric acid (w-dodecanoic), myristic acid (n-tetradecanoic), palmitic acid ( -hexadecanoic),and stearic acid (n-octadecanoic). The unsaturated acids include oleic acid (Z-9-octadecenoic) and linoleic acid (Z,Z-9,12-octadecadienoic). Of the 200 non-ionic surfactants... [Pg.51]

Calcium-bridged fatty acid may be deposited onto hair even in shampoos containing anionic surfactant such as ammonium lauryl sulfate. It is also well known that acid rinses may be used to remove calcium-bridged fatty acid from hair, and anionic sulfate surfactants appear to remove fatty acid deposits from hair. However, copper (cupric ion) adsorbs strongly to hair and is reported to be resistant to removal by anionic surfactant [11]. [Pg.220]

Monovalent and polyvalent alkyl carboxylates are respectively called "soap" and "metallic soap." The straight chain of the fatty acids varies from C12 to C20. Higher members are too hydrophobic to be used and lower members have little surfactant value. Stearic acid soaps are doubtless the most widely utilized emulsifiers in oil-in-waier emulsions. Unsaturated fatty acid soaps such as oleate produce fluid emulsions (IS). The most common associated cations are sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, ammonium, and triethanolamine. Monovalent salts of carboxylic acids are generally used to produce oil-in-water emulsions. [Pg.4]
