Dermal Effects. Based on a skin patch test, allergic (contact) dermatitis to methyl parathion occurred in a farmer (Lisi et al. 1987). [Pg.78]

Magnesium was known in ancient times, but it was not identified as an element until much later. As the story goes, a seventeenth-century farmers cows refused to drink water from a mineral well in Epsom, England. The farmer tasted the water and found it to be bitter but somewhat refreshing. He also noted that it seemed to heal a rash on his skin. After several years, the demand for his Epsom water was more than he could manage, so other sources were located and exploited. To no ones surprise, the product became known as Epsom salt. [Pg.71]

A group of 55 workers who had been employed in the Michigan plant producing FireMaster BP-6 from 1970 to 1974 were examined, and all were found to have serum levels of PBBs greater than lmg/1. An increased prevalence of respiratory symptoms and skin disorders was seen in this group compared with the available data on PBB-exposed farmers lin Michigan. [Pg.592]

Bioavailability from Environmental Media. Diazinon can be absorbed following inhalation, dermal, or oral exposures. Absorption through the skin is of major concern for exposures of farmers, farm workers, commercial applicators, or homeowners related to the use of diazinon as an insecticide or nematocide (Davis et al. 1983). Absorption via inhalation is a major concern particularly with respect to indoor exposures to diazinon within 2 days postapplication of the compound as a pest control agent in commercial buildings and homes (Currie et al. 1990 Jackson and Lewis 1981 Lenhart and Kawamoto 1994 Williams et al. 1987). Additional information on the concentrations of diazinon in indoor air and in groundwater from domestic wells, particularly from environments near hazardous waste sites, is needed to determine the bioavailability of diazinon in these media. [Pg.158]

Antifungals applied topically are used to treat dermatophytic infections caused by Trichophyton and Microsporum species. Ringworm is the most common and widely known of such fungal skin diseases of animals and birds. In recent years, a number of reports have appeared drawing attention to the high incidence of human ringworm caused by fungi from animals. The public health aspects of the disease is of considerable importance, whereas the economic impact to the farmer is yet not clearly defined. [Pg.211]

Breeders have selected celery with relatively high amounts of psoralens because farmers prefer to grow insect resistant plants and consumers prefer to buy undamaged produce. Unfortunately, workers who harvest such celery sometimes develop a severe skin rash (NAS 2004), an unintended consequence of this conventional breeding. It is possible that if the gene encoding the toxic protein had been cloned and studied before being introduced into the new varieties, farm workers would have learned of the harmful effects before exposure. [Pg.92]

For example, persons with xeroderma pigmentosum are deficient in enzymes that repair DNA damage done by ultraviolet radiation, and they develop skin tumors on areas of the body exposed to sunlight. For their own protection, they should not be farmers, cowboys, or lifeguards on sunny beaches. Some chemicals mimic ultraviolet radiation in their effects on DNA, and such persons are expected to be especially susceptible to them. [Pg.231]

You are probably familiar with the term pH from a variety of sources. Advertisers talk about the pH balance of products such as soaps, shampoos, and skin creams. People who own aquariums and swimming pools must monitor the pH of the water. (See Figure 10.10.) Gardeners and farmers use simple tests to determine the pH of the soil. They know that plants and food crops grow best within a narrow range of pH. Similarly, the pH of your blood must remain within narrow limits for you to stay healthy. [Pg.385]
