Farmed organic fish

At present only a handful of fish farms are registered as organic in the UK. They produce either salmon or rainbow trout. The conventional fish farming industry has become highly intensive, requiring the use of a number of chemicals. However, with this type of farming has come cheap salmon - a prospect inconceivable only a few years ago. 

Farmed salmon and trout are available for sale in various forms - whole gutted fish, fillets and smoked. Salmon is available in the familiar cold-smoked form, whereas trout is available in the hot-smoked form.

Organic fish are divided into two groups - farmed and wild. The European organic standards only recognise farmed fish, and once these standards are introduced, wild fish will be relegated to the description of Soil Association Certified.

Only buy fish that has been caught by an environmentally responsible fishery, such as those certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), or that has been farmed organically.

According to the guidelines for organic farming of fish, only certain types of fish meal are allowed for production of fish feed. 

Antibiotics have been and still are extensively used in animal farms and fish farming for disease control and sometimes also for growth promotion. Once administered to animals or fishes, the antibiotic or its metabolites—which may also have antimicrobial properties—can be present in urine and/or feces and thereby reach the environment. The use of farm manure and fishpond sediment as organic fertilizers has a long history in agriculture. 

Single cell protein, normally called simply SCP, is the term used to describe microbial cells, or proteins from them, which are used as food (food for humans) or feed (food for farm animals or fish). Although the term micro-organisms covers viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa, viruses and protozoa are not considered suitable for SCP production. 

With the advent of modern fertilizers, seaweed fell out of use because of the ease of application of formulated pesticides and because the contamination of seaweed washed up on beaches with plastic waste (fishing lines and ropes, bottles, etc.). With the onset of green agriculture and the increasing demand for organically farmed produce, seaweed use as a fertilizer has come back into fashion.
