In the equation referred to above, it is assumed that there is 100 percent transmission of the shear rate in the shear stress. However, with the slurry viscosity determined essentially by the properties of the slurry, at high concentrations of slurries there is a shppage factor. Internal motion of particles in the fluids over and around each other can reduce the effective transmission of viscosity efficiencies from 100 percent to as low as 30 percent. [Pg.1634]

Initially the LP-DE effect was ascribed to the high internal pressure generated by the solubilization of the salt in diethyl ether [34]. Today the acceleration is explained in terms of Lewis-acid catalysis by the lithium cation [35]. The contribution of both factors (internal pressure and lithium cation catalysis) has also been invoked [36]. [Pg.268]

Thus the observed orientation in both kinds of HBr addition (Markovnikov electrophilic and anti-Markovnikov free radical) is caused by formation of the secondary intermediate. In the electrophilic case, it forms because it is more stable than the primary in the free-radical case because it is sterically preferred. The stability order of the free-radical intermediates is also usually in the same direction 3°>2°>1° (p. 241), but this factor is apparently less important than the steric factor. Internal alkenes with no groups present to stabilize the radical usually give an approximately 1 1 mixture. [Pg.985]

Sample preparation, injection, calibration, and data collection, must be automated for process analysis. Methods used for flow injection analysis (FLA) are also useful for reliable sampling for process LC systems.1 Dynamic dilution is a technique that is used extensively in FIA.13 In this technique, sample from a loop or slot of a valve is diluted as it is transferred to a HPLC injection valve for analysis. As the diluted sample plug passes through the HPLC valve it is switched and the sample is injected onto the HPLC column for separation. The sample transfer time typically is determined with a refractive index detector and valve switching, which can be controlled by an integrator or computer. The transfer time is very reproducible. Calibration is typically done by external standardization using normalization by response factor. Internal standardization has also been used. To detect upsets or for process optimization, absolute numbers are not always needed. An alternative to... [Pg.76]

Calibration standards can be of two types external standards and internal standards. With external standards, multiple concentrations of the standards are injected, areas are measured, and a calibration curve is platted. Unknown samples are then injected, chromatograms run, and areas are calculated and compared with the calibration curves to determine amounts of each compound present. With internal standards, known amounts of an internal standard are added to each known concentration of standard compound and areas or peak height response factors relative to those of the internal standard are calculated. When unknowns are run, a known amount of internal standard is added to the unknown sample, response factors are calculated relative to the internal standards, and amounts of each unknown present are calculated from the standards calibration factors. Internal standards are usually used to correct for variations in injection size due to different operators and injection techniques. Internal standards can also be used to correct for extraction variation in GC/MS target compound quantitation, this standard is referred to as a surrogate standard. Generally, an internal standard is used for one purpose or the other, not both at the same time. [Pg.172]

Crystal growth is governed by both internal and external factors. Internal factors such as the three-dimensional (3-D) crystal structure and crystal defects will determine the nature and strength of the intermole-cular interactions between the crystal surface and the solution whereas external factors such as temperature, supersaturation, solvent, and the presence of impurities will affect the type of interactions at the solid-liquid interface. The external shape or morphology of a crystal is a consequence of the relative growth rates of the... [Pg.844]
