It follows therefore that the specific surface of a mesoporous solid can be determined by the BET method (or from Point B) in just the same way as that of a non-porous solid. It is interesting, though not really surprising, that monolayer formation occurs by the same mechanism whether the surface is wholly external (Type II isotherm) or is largely located on the walls of mesopores (Type IV isotherm). Since the adsorption field falls off fairly rapidly with distance from the surface, the building up of the monolayer should not be affected by the presence of a neighbouring surface which, as in a mesopore, is situated at a distance large compared with the size of a molecule. [Pg.168]

Phosphopantetheine tethering is a posttranslational modification that takes place on the active site serine of carrier proteins - acyl carrier proteins (ACPs) and peptidyl carrier proteins (PCPs), also termed thiolation (T) domains - during the biosynthesis of fatty acids (FAs) (use ACPs) (Scheme 23), polyketides (PKs) (use ACPs) (Scheme 24), and nonribosomal peptides (NRPs) (use T domain) (Scheme 25). It is only after the covalent attachment of the 20-A Ppant arm, required for facile transfer of the various building block constituents of the molecules to be formed, that the carrier proteins can interact with the other components of the different multi-modular assembly lines (fatty acid synthases (FASs), polyketide synthases (PKSs), and nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs)) on which the compounds of interest are assembled. The structural organizations of FASs, PKSs, and NRPSs are analogous and can be divided into three broad classes the types I, II, and III systems. Even though the role of the carrier proteins is the same in all systems, their mode of action differs from one system to another. In the type I systems the carrier proteins usually only interact in cis with domains to which they are physically attached, with the exception of the PPTases and external type II thioesterase (TEII) domains that act in trans. In the type II systems the carrier proteins selectively interact... [Pg.455]

Unity, the most important characteristic of the mystical experience, is divided into internal and external types, which are different ways of experiencing an undifferentiated unity. The major difference is that the internal type finds unity... [Pg.148]

Lubricants are often employed to facilitate the uniform transmission of forces and reduce undesirable friction effects during compaction. Lubricants may be classified as internal or external types [2]. Internal lubricants are materials which are added to the particulate feed not only to improve its flow properties (flow into the mold or die and rearrangement during compaction) but also to assist in the release of the final agglomerate from the mold or die. Internal lubricants are generally used in quantities of % to 2%. Internal lubricants, especially when used in excess, may interfere with the optimum cohesion of clean surfaces and reduce the strength of the agglomerates produced. External lubricants are materials used to prevent friction and wear at... [Pg.99]

The external type of reference electrode is connected to the membrane via a liquid electrolyte bridge, such as a sulphuric acid solution, as shown in Figure 5.45. Compared with the internal reference electrode configuration, the external type is easier to use in a normal PEM fuel cell set-up because it needs minimal modifications. However, attention must also be paid to ensure that the liquid electrolyte has good contact with the membrane and does not flow into the cell. Furthermore, the use of a liquid electrolyte in an acid bridge can induce non-uniform hydration and a proton concentration gradient in the membrane, therefore interfering with the fuel cell electrodes. [Pg.245]

The techniques necessary for placing concrete depend upon the type of member to be cast, namely whether it is a column, a beam, a wall, a slab, a foundation, a mass concrete dam, or an extension of previously placed and hardened concrete. For beams, columns and walls, the forms should be well oiled after cleaning them, and the reinforcement should be compacted and thoroughly moistened to about 6" depth to avoid absorption of the moisture present in the wet concrete. Concrete should always be placed in horizontal layers which are compacted by means of high-frequency power-driven vibrators of either the immersion or external type as the case may need. It must be kept in mind, however, that over-vibration can be harmful since it could cause segregation of the aggregate and bleeding of the concrete. [Pg.99]

Plasticisers may function either externally or internally in preparation and action, and thus can be of internal or external types. [Pg.49]

The ability of CDs to form intermolecular complexes with other molecules was already known in the early twentieth century. These complexes are mostly of inclusion type but might also be of external type. Another important property of CDs is that each glucose molecule in this macrocycle contains five chiral carbon atoms. [Pg.419]

In practice, commercial lubricants (with few exceptions) are intermediate in character between internal and external types, although they may have a greater tendency towards one than the other. Since the compatibility of a lubricant depends partly on its polarity and that of the polymer, it may be more external in one polymer and more internal in another. [Pg.70]

The results of our earlier investigation using spin-labelling technique to understand the structural aspects involved in the various emulsions, support the theory that water-external macroemulsions exist below optimal salinities and oil-external types exist beyond optimal salinity. In addition it was found that microemulsions coexisted with macroemulsions and were of the same type in the sonicated emulsions. These findings are further complemented by electrical conductance and bulk viscosity data. [Pg.328]
