Other Disposable Applications. There are many other disposable appHcations for spunbonded fabrics including fiber bale wrap, metal core wrap, wipes, and clothes dryer fabric softener sheets. 

A reverse-wipe appHcation is seen ia the clothes dryer fabric softener sheet whereia the spunbonded fabric is coated with a complex combination of compounds that are released iato the environment of a hot clothes dryer to soften and perfume the clothes, as weU as provide an antistatic quaHty. The spunbonded sheet, which must be made of polyester or nylon for temperature resistance, provides a simple and cost-effective medium to store the chemical compounds prior to release ia the dryer.

Because of the static electricity imparted to synthetic fabrics by tumble drying, and the increasing proportion of synthetic fabrics in the U.S., the sales of dryer-sheet fabric softener rose much more in the U.S. than in the rest of the world. Today, tumble dryer sheets and liquid softener sales are of the same order of magnitude [5,6,16], In contrast, rinse-added softeners had a much larger impact in Europe, where 100% cotton items have always been dominant and line drying is still standard practice hence, the softener effect is more noticeable to consumers. 

Electrical tumble dryers are much more popular in the U.S. than in Europe (see Section IV). Consequently the market penetration of dryer cycle fabric softeners is much more important in North America than anywhere else. They are usually based on the same types of actives as the rinse cycle fabric softeners [35], Two methods of delivery exist. Nonwoven sheets are impregnated with cationic softener that are incorporated in the wet load at the start of tumble drying or a fabric conditioner is sprayed from an aerosol onto the empty dryer drum before the drying process [16].

Part of the U.S. market moved also from DHTDMAC to esterquats. This change was initially only for rinse cycle softeners. At this moment esterquats are also used in tumble dryer sheets. The rest of the world shows more and more interest in the use of esterquats as fabric softener. 

Fabric softeners are available to consumers in three different forms. The majority is used as rinse cycle softener. A second application is as tumble dryer sheets, and is important in the United States. The third application is as detergent-containing softeners, also known as softergents.

Smith and Kellett [107] reported the use of Pluronic L-61 to assist in the formation of a uniform liquid dispersion of a fabric-softener composition on dryer sheets. Novich et al. [108] described a new composition for impregnating glass-fiber strands for use in reinforcing thermoplastic resins. This formulation used Pluronic F-108 as an emulsifying agent.

Although anionics and nonionics may be used in industrial applications, all products destined for domestic applications have a cationic surfactant as the active agent. Fabric softeners are sold as dispersions, to be added to the rinse water, or in dry form carried on nonwoven sheets, for use in the dryer. The most common active agent for both applications is a quaternary amine salt with high alkyl character and low water solubility, such as the chloride or methyl sulfate salt of ditallowdimethylammonium ion. 

Fabric softener sheets normally contain quaternaries formulated as their methyl sulfate salts, since the more common chloride salts can be corrosive to the dryer. Sheets usually contain other compounds like acid ethoxylates or amine soaps to optimize properties and performance. Some fabric softeners also contain amphoterics, generally imidazolines rather than quaternary amines. 

Dryer softeners are placed in the tumble dryers along with the moist laundry. The most commonly used dryer softeners are made from sheets of polyurethane foam or nonwoven material impregnated with active matter, to act as a carrier [8]. U.S. Patent 5300238, European Patent Application 0544493 Al, and U.K. Patent Application GB 2240791 A give examples of fabric conditioning compositions produced by coating a flexible substrate for use in a mechanical dryer [26-28].
