In the previous chapter an overview was presented of the experiences with NMMS systems currently operating in Western-Europe and in particular in the Netherlands. Ironically, despite all this scientific progress, modern fiberoptic cables went into service during a decade of chemical catastrophes more reminiscent of the old Leblanc factories than of optical fibers superpurity. On December 3, 1984, a cloud of deadly methylisocyanate gas leaked from a Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India the gas killed more than 3000 people and injured up to 25,000. Two years later in Europe, a Sandoz chemical factory spilled 30 tons of chemicals into the Rhine River, killing fish for 120 miles downstream. In North America, the Exxon Valdez oil tanker spilled crude oil over 1000 miles of Alaskan coastline in 1989. 

Next came acquisitions, funded in part by the divestitures, that reinforced the learning base in the paths that the firm had long followed. In films and fibers it purchased Exxon s carbon fiber business in 1984, Exxon s film composites activities in 1985, and Hercules s olefin fiber carpets in 1989. Later, in 1992, it traded its acrylic assets to ICI for the latter s nylon business, plus 41 million. In paints and finishes Du Pont obtained Ford s North American automotive paint division in 1986, followed by a joint venture with ICI to expand the same market in Europe, and one with Kami Paint to do so in Japan and East Asia. In agricultural chemicals it acquired Shell s agricultural chemicals division in 1986, and later in 1992 collaborated with Shell to develop specialized insecticides. For Du Pont, sustaining its technical and functional capabilities in long-established paths in which it was a competitive leader remained a basic strategy. ... 

Clive Capps is a versatile business manager with a degree in chemistry and over 30 years experience in the paper and the chemicals industries. This involved both working on technical development in the fine paper mills sector and responsibility for sales of chemicals to European paper mills. He had a spell away from the paper industry in the mid-1970s with Exxon Enterprises, when he was in charge of sales of solar energy devices to Europe and parts of the developing world.
