Next came acquisitions, funded in part by the divestitures, that reinforced the learning base in the paths that the firm had long followed. In films and fibers it purchased Exxon s carbon fiber business in 1984, Exxon s film composites activities in 1985, and Hercules s olefin fiber carpets in 1989. Later, in 1992, it traded its acrylic assets to ICI for the latter s nylon business, plus 41 million. In paints and finishes Du Pont obtained Ford s North American automotive paint division in 1986, followed by a joint venture with ICI to expand the same market in Europe, and one with Kami Paint to do so in Japan and East Asia. In agricultural chemicals it acquired Shell s agricultural chemicals division in 1986, and later in 1992 collaborated with Shell to develop specialized insecticides. For Du Pont, sustaining its technical and functional capabilities in long-established paths in which it was a competitive leader remained a basic strategy. ... [Pg.51]

Solvent power of a hydrocarbon solvents is determined by kauri-butanol value. The method applies to solvents having a boiling point above 40 C and a dry point below 300"C. The method is most frequently used to evaluate solvents for applications in paints and lacquers. The kami-butanol value is the volxune of solvent required to produce a defined degree of turbidity when added to 20 g of a standard solution of kauri resin in n-butanol (400 g of resin in 2000 g of solvent). High kami value indicates a relatively strong dissolving power. The method is standardized using 105+5 ml of toluene. [Pg.1066]

Gum arabic is a tree exudate of various Acacia species, primarily Acacia Senegal, and is obtained as a result of tree bark injury. It is collected as air-dried droplets with diameters from 2-7 cm The annual yield per tree averages 0.9-2.0 kg. The major producer is Sudan, with 50-60,000 t/annum, followed by several other African countries. Gum arabic has been known since ancient Eg)q)t as kami , an adhesive for pigmented paints. [Pg.307]
