Extrusion processes feeding

In the two typical shaft seal manufacturing processes shown in Fig. 2, the extrusion process is only required if the compression molding process is being used. There are basically two types of extruders in general use, the cold feed and the hot feed. In both cases their role is to produce the preforms for use with compression molding. The critical issues with the preform are the shape, the dimensions, and the weight. [Pg.455]

The success of any continuous extrusion process depends not only upon uniform quality and conditioning of the raw materials but also upon the speed and continuity of the feed of additives or regrind along with virgin plastic upstream of the extruders hopper. Variations in the bulk density of materials can exist in the hopper, requiring controllers such as weight feeders, etc. [Pg.476]

For example, if a two-stage vented extruder has a screw that was designed for resins with an Mi range of 2 to 20 dg/min, and plant personnel are asked to manufacture a resin with an MI of 100 dg/min, the extruder may not process the resin acceptably. For this case and flood feeding, the extruder is likely to have resin flowing into the vent because the first stage can deliver more resin than the second stage can pump. One practical solution to this problem is to operate the slide valve in a partially open manner such that it controls the rate of the extrusion process. This will allow the extruder to operate at a lower specific rate and allow operation without the flow of resin into the vent. [Pg.673]

The attributes of the extrudate, such as density, thickness, and moisture content, are controlled by variables due to the formulation, extrusion process, and equipment design. The properties of the wet feed material and its ability... [Pg.328]

Pressure pellets sink when placed in water, whereas under the proper conditions, floating pellets can be produced through the extrusion process. That is accomplished when the feed mixture contains high levels of starch that expands and traps air as the cooked pellets leave the barrel of the extruder. This gives the pellets a density of less than 1.0. Floating pellets are desirable for species that come to the surface to feed since the aquaculturist can visually determine that the fish are actively feeding and can control daily feeding rates based on observed consumption. [Pg.21]

Extrusion processing is one of the most highlighted food processing to which potential application of a flow NMR image (a modified time-of-flight) have been demonstrated [61]. A vast array of food and feed products are produced by extrusion processing, an efficient method... [Pg.134]

Extrusion of mixed feed has been found to be beneficial in improving digestibility. However, the process is generally limited to pet and fish feeds because of cost. Pelleting or extrusion of mixed feed has additional benefits relating to environmental and consumer safety aspects. Coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli, salmonellae and moulds are greatly reduced by pelleting and eliminated by the extrusion process. [Pg.239]

The formula mixture is finally forced (extruded) through a set of dies where it is drawn into long, thin strands. These strands are pulled through contact cooling water for a few seconds, which causes the resin to set before it enters a pelletizer. The pelletizer is a sharp fan or chopper that rotates at a specific speed coordinated with the strand feed rate to slice the strands into pellets of the desired size. The pellets are then automatically screened, and pellet product of the correct specification size range is dropped into the desired packing container. Rejected pellets and particle product are returned as feedstock to the front of the extrusion process for reprocessing. [Pg.305]

Polymer additives that can be incorporated in the polymerization process or post-compounded into the HIPS product can add significant enhanced functionality. The use of 2 % polyisobutene (PIB), for instance, in the HIPS process feed solution in place of the usual plasticizer can dramatically increase ESCR by a factor of 10 for both standard- and ESCR-grade HIPS. It is interesting that even in the presence of PIB, RPS still has a significant effect on ESCR, as seen in a comparison of extrusion-grade with ESCR-grade HIPS in Table 12.12. [Pg.264]
