There are six subunits in the asymmetric unit of the Panuliris structure, arranged in a particle best described as a trimer of dimers. The 3-2 symmetry was good enough to be useful in a phase extension technique commonly used in the structure determination of highly symmetric viruses. Unfortunately, these crystals diffract only to 3.2 A, so that there cannot be a high level of detail available for description of the active site. Nevertheless, because there are six independent copies of the molecule in the asymmetric unit, there is more information than might normally be available at this resolution. The structure has been carefully refined at this resolution, with and without the 3-2 symmetry restraint. The estimated coordinate error is —0.35 A. Quantitation of bile acid synthesis. Bulk measurement of fecal bile acids with GLC (cf. 5) is quite simple at the moment and has been widely used for quantitation of total bile acid synthesis. The use of nonpolar capillary column is preferable for routin work. The complexity of the fecal bile acid mixture requires extensive technique for quantitation of individual bile acids of cholic acid and chenodeoxycholic acid origin or their different conjugates. According to our experience about 80% of the fecal bile acids in normal feces can be identified with a reasonable accuracy from the GLC run on capillary column to originate from either cholic or chenodeoxycholic acid. Usually litho and deoxycholic acids are major fractions but sometimes 38-OH bile acids can predominate. In bile acid malabsorption 7-dehydr-oxylated derivatives are frequentl3 lacking or small and the presence of 7 3-011 and/or ketonic transformation products can be conspicious (see Fig. 1). [Pg.90]

It can be seen that flie average concentrate feed rate has been increased from initially designed 32 to the current 70 dry t/h. This means that the productivity has been doubled as a result of extensive technique development at Dongying Fangyuan Nonferrous Metals. The current feed rate is limited by the capability of oxygen production and add plant. It is expected that more concentrate can be treated in the bottom blown furnace with expanded oxygen and acid plants.
