By definition, cell mitosis results in two daughter cells, identical to each other and to the parent cell. So in order to break symmetry, bit 1 in the state vector is set to 1 in one cell, while it is set to the reverse (0) in the other cell. The first 3 bits of the state vector are prespecified as the ones indicating cell type — in reverse. For example, a cell with state vector = 001110 has type 001-reversed, which is 100 or 4 (in decimal). This entails that the first division inevitably results in two cells of different types with state vectors 000100 and 100100, respectively.

In the shorter case studies, only the immediate causes of the errors are described. However, the more extended examples in the latter part of the appendix illustrate two important points about accident causation. In this section, two models of development were presented, a complex model consisting of a multioperon genome and a cytoplasm, and a simple model based on random Boolean networks. The simpler model was explained in more detail, as it is the basis for the extended example described here. This model utilizes both development and evolution to get to a cell that can develop into a multicellular organism able to seek a chemical trace.

After these first experiments it took 11 years until this problem was studied again exploiting the unique possibilities of NSE with respect to contrast variation and energy resolution [29]. The studied microemulsion was an o/w-droplet microemulsion in the system H2O/ -octane/C10E5. It turned out that the NSE data can be analysed using a double exponential fit according to Eq. (2.8), when the translational diffusion coefficient is already measured in advance using PCS. The same approach was also successfully applied to study another water-continuous microemulsion in the system H2 0/n-dodecane/Cio E-[49]. Since the approach works as well for oil-continuous systems an extended example for the approach will be discussed in the next subsection. 

Because so much of test and inspection is now concerned with vision systems, whether human or automated, this section will use automated vision as an extended example through which to discuss issues of automation in general. A typical example has already been presented, that of rose grading, and will be used to illustrate concepts as they arise. 

Extending example 3.4 the heat exchanger is now treated explicitly. It is modelled as a circular pipe with perimeter P. The thickness of its walls is neglected for simplicity s sake (Fig. 3.3). The inlet temperature of the coolant (a mixture of water and methanol) amounts to Se = —5 °C. Its thermal capacity is Ccooiant = 3,600 J/(kg K). This modified model enables one to analyze partial cooling failure which may occur, for example, if the coolant circuit control valve remains stuck in a position of partial opening. 

Dual element transducer is an extended example of multiple probe technique in which one element acts as emitter and the other as receiver. These transducers are designed for measuring very thin materials or when detecting near surface discontinuities. Using this concept, it is possible to focus the ultrasonic beam. One of the major uses of focused probes is defect sizing by means of diffraction techniques. 

Coverage of related material was presented in short lectures with examples and multiple in class activities allowing students to work with the topic rather than simply observe the instructor performing calculations. The review of examples day was an opportunity for students to ask questions based on extended examples and solutions posted by the instructor or any other questions they might have. For external workdays the classroom was closed, but the instructor was available in the building for questions, while for internal workdays the instructor was in the classroom and students were allowed to work either in the room or elsewhere. In Class Designs were essentially tests on the projects and are further detailed in the delivery differences section under implementation. 

In terms of related work, specifications by examples are surveyed in Section 3.1. Also, the notion of specifying property can be traced back to the notion of specifying axiom, and specifications by axioms are surveyed in Section 2.1. In this section, we only survey research on extending example-based specifications by another incomplete information source.

An important extended example of enzyme interconversion cycles is the reciprocal control of glycogen metabolism involving glycogen synthase and glycogen phosphorylase (Section 11.5). The activities of both enzymes are regulated in concert by phosphorylation and dephosphorylation reactions so that when the synthetic pathway is in operation, the degradative pathway is reciprocally r uced.
