In expendable pattern casting, the pattern is not removed from the mould before pouring. The pattern, which is made of expanded material, is a single-use one, which is destroyed when poured. These expandable patterns may be embedded either in chemically-bonded sands or in binderless sand, hardened by vibration. [Pg.74]

This process, as far as moulding is concerned, is very environmentally friendly, but produces gaseous emissions during pouring and shake-out, due to the vaporisation of the expandable patterns and destruction of the sand binder. [Pg.76]

In the low pressure process, a short shot of a resia containing a blowiag ageat is forced iato the mold where the expandable material is aUowed to expand to fiU the mold under pressures of 690—4140 kPa (100—600 psi). This process produces stmctural foam products with a characteristic surface swid pattern produced by the coUapse of ceUs on the surface of molded articles. [Pg.406]

Historically, the world s petroleum production pattern can be related to geologic, economic, and pohtical factors. In the past, many countries have had large excesses in production capacity, whereas in the 1990s, only countries in the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates, have, in the short mn, enough excess capacity to expand production of conventional cmde petroleum in any significant manner. In the Middle East, production of petroleum is over five times the region s consumption (see Table 4). On a much smaller scale, Africa produces far more petroleum than it consumes (3.4 times). [Pg.220]

Expanded Flow. Expanded dow uses the best aspects of fuimel dow and mass dow by attaching a mass dow hopper section below one that exhibits fuimel dow. The dow pattern expands sufficiendy at the top of the mass dow hopper to prevent a stable rathole from forming in the funnel dow hopper above it. In this way, the dow channel is expanded, material dow is uniform, and the bin height is limited. [Pg.553]

A potential problem for rotary valve usage is that they tend to pull material preferentially from the upside of the valve, which can affect the mass flow pattern. Another problem is that once soHd drops from the vane, the air or gas that replaces it is often pumped back up into the bin. In addition, air can leak around the valve rotor. Such air flows can decrease the soflds flow rates and/or cause flooding problems. A vertical section shown in Figure 13 can alleviate the preferential flow problem because the flow channel expands in this area, usually opening up to the full outlet. To rectify the countercurrent air flow problem, a vent line helps to take the air away to a dust collector or at least back into the top of the bin. [Pg.558]

X-ray diffraction patterns yield typical 1.2—1.4 nm basal spacings for smectite partially hydrated in an ordinary laboratory atmosphere. Solvating smectite in ethylene glycol expands the spacing to 1.7 nm, and beating to 550°C collapses it to 1.0 nm. Certain micaceous clay minerals from which part of the metallic interlayer cations of the smectites has been stripped or degraded, and replaced by expand similarly. Treatment with strong solutions of... [Pg.198]

The physical stmcture of mixed-layer minerals is open to question. In the traditional view, the MacEwan crystallite is a combination of 1.0 nm (10 E) non-expandable units (iUite) that forms as an epitaxial growth on 1.7 nm expandable units (smectite) that yield a coherent diffraction pattern (37). This view is challenged by the fundamental particle hypothesis which is based on the existence of fundamental particles of different thickness (160—162). [Pg.200]

Figure 3.17 shows the evolution of an initial state consisting only of blocks 11100 and 11110 , except for two defects , 00 and 10 , placed at the end (periodic boundary conditions are used). Starting from these defects, the stable class c3 behavior expands approximately linearly in time to eventually dominate the overall pattern. [Pg.70]

Unlike the orifice or nozzle, the pipeline maintains the area of flow constant and equal to its cross-sectional area. There is no possibility therefore of the gas expanding laterally. Supersonic flow conditions can be reached in pipeline installations in a manner similar to that encountered in flow through a nozzle, but not within the pipe itself unless the gas enters the pipe at a supersonic velocity. If a pipe connects two reservoirs and the upstream reservoir is maintained at constant pressure P, the following pattern will occur as the pressure P2 in the downstream reservoir is reduced. [Pg.158]

The rock-salt structure is a common ionic structure that takes its name from the mineral form of sodium chloride. In it, the Cl- ions lie at the corners and in the centers of the faces of a cube, forming a face-centered cube (Fig. 5.39). This arrangement is like an expanded ccp arrangement the expansion keeps the anions out of contact with one another, thereby reducing their repulsion, and opens up holes that are big enough to accommodate the Na+ ions. These ions fit into the octahedral holes between the Cl ions. There is one octahedral hole for each anion in the close-packed array, and so all the octahedral holes are occupied. If we look carefully at the structure, we can see that each cation is surrounded by six anions and each anion is surrounded by six cations. The pattern repeats over and over, with each ion surrounded by six other ions of the opposite charge (Fig. 5.40). A crystal of sodium chloride is a three-dimensional array of a vast number of these little cubes. [Pg.321]
