European Union , pesticide regulations

Directive 259/93 of the European Union It regulates the inport of hazardous waste back to the country of origin, mostly OECD countries. This was actually an instrument to prevent waste tourism , but it is also the most important tool and the legal basis for the re-import of the obsolete pesticide stocks back to Europe... [Pg.50]

Field residue data, which are generated to meet requirements in the pesticide registration process, are used to regulate the use of agriculture products within the European Union (EU). This article examines the best practices to conduct crop field trials and to generate crop residue samples in Europe in order to provide part of the data that the agrochemical producers of the active ingredients must provide to the EU Commission. [Pg.169]

Local certification has a number of advantages, not least that it is one way to reduce costs to producers in developing countries via locally determined fees reflecting local incomes (Barrett et al., 2001). To be accepted by the European Union (EU), local certification bodies are required to demonstrate that their standards of organic production and inspection are equivalent to EU regulations. The standards need not necessarily be identical, however, and as such this means more locally appropriate standards can be set in place. For example, local certification bodies may well allow the use of such natural pesticides that would not normally be allowed under EU Standards (Myers, 2000). [Pg.455]

In agriculture, several hundreds of different pesticides have been used worldwide over the last few decades. Owing to their widespread appHcations and persistence in the environment, pesticides are acciunulating in media such as soil and ground water. Many pesticides exhibit endocrine-disrupting activity, which poses a threat to public health and local ecosystems, and are therefore regulated. In the European Union, the maximiun allowable concentrations in... [Pg.192]

At present, complete harmonization of MRLs across the European Union (EU) member states has not yet been accomplished. Thus, most regulation of pesticide residues in food is based on MRLs established by national legislation in each member state. These un-harmonized MRLs may reflect different GAP and thus may differ between members. A program for creation of a harmonized set of EU... [Pg.34]

Eurthermore, to ensure consumer protection by regulating the use of pesticides during the process of the production of olive fruits used in VOO production, both the European Union and the Codex Alimentarius Commission of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have established maximum residue levels (MRLs) in table olives and olives for oil production [110,111]. [Pg.231]

Official Journal of the European Union 16.3.2005, L 70/1 Regulation (EC) No, 396/2005 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 February 2005 on maximum residue levels of pesticides in or on food and feed of plant and animal origin and amending Council Directive 91/414/EEC. [Pg.1076]
