European project

The work presented is part of a European project (Biosensors for Effective Environmental Protection BEEP) which is aimed at the assembly and application of Photosystem II (PS II)-based biosensors for large scale environmental screening of specific herbicides and heavy metals. 

This code originates from the University of Athens and has been further developed in the frame of an European project, the results of which arc documented in Allard, including a CD with the AlOLOS code.

A three-year joint European project, RECAM, recommends that it should be possible to colleet more than 50% of carpet waste in Western Europe. High-grade materials such as PA and PP could be recovered for the manufacture of engineering plastics compounds and more than 8 million Gigajoules of energy could be reeovered from the remainder. At the heart of the proj ect are ehemieal recycling processes developed by both DSM and Enichem. 

FUN tool is a new integrated software based on a multimedia model, physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models and associated databases. The tool is a dynamic integrated model and is capable of assessing the human exposure to chemical substances via multiple exposure pathways and the potential health risks (Fig. 9) [70]. 2-FUN tool has been developed in the framework of the European project called 2-FUN (Full-chain and UNcertainty Approaches for Assessing Health Risks in FUture ENvironmental Scenarios www.2-fun.org). 

Volvo is also a partner in another European project, the Capril project, which is managed by Volkswagon. A fuel cell VW Golf was built to run on methanol. Volvo developed the compressor, power converter and energy control system.

The primary element standards especially the primary pure elements are used for the production of other reference materials (Element-solutions for PTB/Merck and EMPA/Fluka as well as isotopic standards for IRMM [Joint European Project for Primary Isotopic Measurements=JEPPIM]). 

These flat-type membrane contactors have been used in several demonstration tests carried out in the framework of the previously cited European projects or independently by GVS in collaboration with selected industrial end-users. The efforts have been concentrated on two sectors ... 

European Projects on QSAR and Regulations 8.6.1 The DEMETRA Project... 

The DEMETRA project [20, 26] represents the first important case of a European project to develop QSAR models for regulatory purposes. DEMETRA developed five free models to determine the ecotoxicity of pesticides using endpoints that include trout, daphnia, bees, and quails (oral and dietary exposure). Since the target was to develop models for the user, these five endpoints were decided by them, not by the developers. 

At CEA, the studies on this process have started more recently. The two critical components of the process components are the high-temperature decomposition reactor and the SDE. Beside the European project mentioned above on the process heat reactor for S03 decomposition, CEA studies therefore focus on the electrolysis section, with a pilot now in operation in Marcoule (see Figure 7). Indeed, a major challenge for the HyS process is the development of an efficient, cost-effective SDE. Prevention of S02 migration through the separation membrane of the electrolyser, which leads to undesired sulphur deposits, remains a major technical hurdle to overcome. Like for all electrolytic processes, economic competitiveness of the cycle will also depend on the minimisation of electrolysis overvoltage and on components lifetime (membrane, interconnectors). 

The connection scheme developed by the European Projects HYTHEC and RAPHAEL (Le Duigou, 2007) represents a self-sustainable plant concept in which, in addition to the heat supply to the S-I cycle, the electrical demand of the internal consumers is provided by the nuclear reactor. The high temperature flow exiting the nuclear reactor transfers its heat via an IHX to a secondary loop which interacts with the components of the S-I cycle components. The high temperature heat flow is split and partially directed to the chemical part of the cycle and another part to a Brayton cycle for electricity production needed to power pumps, compressors, heat pumps and other auxiliaries. 

A special focus of the development regarding solar thermochemical processes is the high temperature endothermic decomposition of sulphuric acid. The solarisation of this step was part of the R D activities of the European project HYTHEC (HYdrogen THErmochemical Cycles) with an emphasis on components development and process improvement (Noglik, 2009).
