GenBank is the NIH genetic sequence database, and an annotated collection of all publicly available DNA sequences. It is part of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration, which comprises the GenBank at NCBI, DNA DataBank of Japan (DDBJ), and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). These three organizations exchange data on a daily basis.

Several public consortia, such as the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the National Center for Biotechnical Information (NCBI), and many other organizations created databanks where data could be publicly submitted and described in a MIA ME-compI iant form.

ECDIN is a factual databank, created at the Ispra Establishment of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the Commission of the European Communities as a part of the Commission s Environmental Research Programme. The databank enables people engaged in environmental management and research to obtain reliable information on chemical compounds. The databank brings together a wide variety of data on chemicals which actually or potentially occur in the environment as a result of human activities. The broad spectrum of parameters and properties contained in ECDIN provides the user with general information on chemical substances and supports the evaluation of the risks connected to the use of these substances. The ECDIN database establishes links between various types of data is therefore a powerful tool for correlation analyses. 

Chemical names and synonyms are the most important keys to retrieval of data from the ECDIN databank. The synonyms stored in the ECDIN files can be divided into three groups, synonyms from the files of Chemical Abstracts Service, names used by the European Customs Union, and names from other sources. The first group of names is mainly in the English language, whereas the two other groups contain names in more European languages. Figure 1 shows different names for butanoic acid. 

In case that no MSDS is available, there exists the possibility to search the required information in the databank of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). In the C L-Inventory, the CAS and/or EINECS numbers, the corresponding classi cation, required labels and the corresponding H (hazard) and the P (precautionary) statements, and the CHS pictograms of all chemicals registered in the EU can be found. However, this ECHA databank is of help only for orientation, as, for example, there exist for Orange Oil sweet CAS No. 8028-48-6 a total of 56 entries. 

The European Strong-Motion Database (http // www.isesdJii.is/ESD Local/framesetJitm) contains more than 3,000 uniformly processed and formatted waveforms. Each waveform is associated to earthquake and station parameters. The user can search the database and databank interactively and download selected strong-motion records and associated parameters.
