Chemical companies also perform little research outside their home country. The overall average of overseas invented patents is 11.6%. European companies locate 86.0% of their researeh activity in chemicals in Europe. In biotechnology, this share drops to 80.2% suggesting that European companies locate biotechnology research abroad more than in the other chemical sectors and much more than the other countries do. The share of bioteehnology patents invented abroad by European companies is 19.8% (16.6% invented in the US vs. 5.1% of American biotechnological patents invented in Europe). [Pg.140]
