Discovered in 1803 by Wollaston, Palladium is found with platinum and other metals of the platinum group in placer deposits of Russia, South America, North America, Ethiopia, and Australia. It is also found associated with the nickel-copper deposits of South Africa and Ontario. Palladium s separation from the platinum metals depends upon the type of ore in which it is found. [Pg.112]

Interest in chemical variation in Phytolacca dodecandra L Hert. stems from its potentially important biologically active constituents, perhaps the most significant of which is the mollnscicidal componnd lemmatoxin. Attempts to measure variation within this taxon, which occnrs widely on the African continent, have involved a stndy of morphological featnres (Adams et al., 1989) and the comparative chemical work to be described here (Adams et al., 1990). This more recent study involved analysis of nonpolar constitnents from three populations from Ethiopia, and one... [Pg.7]

After the extrachon of total lipids from four different genotypes of flax seed (Linum usitassimum) differing markedly in their acyl composihon, PTLC was used for the isolahon of different lipid classes in the neutral lipid frachon [69]. Application of planar chromatographic methods, including PTLC, in the separahon of food lipids has been reviewed with 40 references by Olsson [70]. The polar lipid fraction of niger seed (Guizotia abyssinica Cass.) collected from different regions of Ethiopia could be separated by PTLC on silica gel [71]. [Pg.319]

Olibanum (frankincense) is one of a group known as the oleogum resins (mono-, sesqui-, di-, and triterpenes and mucous substances) that exude from incisions in the bark of the Boswellia trees (fam Burseraceae), the most common species of which are B. carterii (Sudan, Somalia, and Ethiopia) and B. serrata (India), whereas B. frereana (Oman, Somalia) and B. sacra (Arabia) belong to the rare resins on the market. [Pg.392]

A perceptible marker of the olibanum fragrances coming from Somalia, Sudan, or Ethiopia is the aliphatic octyl acetate marked by a distinct acrid smell. Boswellia carterii contains up to 50% of the aliphatic octyl acetate, demonstrated by the strong stinging smell of the fume, whereas Boswellia serrata (its common name in India is salai guggul) contains none or only small amounts of it and, consequentiy, does not have such a harsh smell. [Pg.393]

Biomass supplies almost 15% of the world s energy. In developing countries this amount can be as high as 50%. Nepal, Ethiopia, and Haiti derive most of their energy from biomass. Kenya, Maldives, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius derive over half. [Pg.88]

Thus saith the Lord—The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia and of the Sabaeans, men of stature, shall come over unto thee—they shall be thine—they shall come after thee in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee they shall make supplication unto thee, saying, surely God is in thee, and there is none else, there is no God. ... [Pg.66]

The wise and paternal government of Cyrus might seem to be sanctioned by that approval which characterized him as the shepherd of God. The moderation of his conduct, considering the importance of the enterprise in which he was engaged, was remarkable. He enjoyed uninterrupted prosperity, and a dominion which extended from India to the Caspian, Euxine, and iEgean seas, and which was bounded to the south by. Ethiopia and the Arabian Gulf. [Pg.83]
