Ionisations 2, 3 and 5 are complete ionisations so that in water HCI and HNO3 are completely ionised and H2SO4 is completely ionised as a monobasic acid. Since this is so, all these acids in water really exist as the solvated proton known as the hydrogen ion, and as far as their acid properties are concerned they are the same conjugate acid species (with different conjugate bases). Such acids are termed strong acids or more correctly strong acids in water. (In ethanol as solvent, equilibria such as 1 would be the result for all the acids quoted above.) Ionisations 4 and 6 do not proceed to completion... [Pg.85]

In addition to chloroform, many other compounds containing the trichloro-methyl group, CI3C-, show marked physiological action. Thus trichloro-acetaldehyde or chloral hydrate, Cl3C CH(OH) (p. 342), and trichloro-tertiary-butanol or chloretone, CUC CfCHaliOH, are both hypnotics. Similarly, tribromo-ethanol or avertin, BraC-CHjOH, has strong anaesthetic properties. [Pg.91]

Physical properties. All colourless. Formaldehyde, HCHO, is a gas, and only its aqueous solution, which has a characteristic pungent odour, is considered metaformaldehyde or trioxymethylene , (CH20)3, is a solid polymer, insoluble in water and ethanol. [Pg.341]

After distillation terminates (Ethanol boils at 78.4C), test your Safrole using the physical properties data below to confirm purity. Theoretically, your product should be better than 99% pure now. [Pg.37]

The thiazolium ring, as most heterocycloammoniums, is a Lewis acid conferring to the carbon atom in the 2-position the carbocationic property of adding the free pair of a base either organic or mineral that may be the molecule of solvent as ROH (Scheme 11). For many nuclei of suitable acidity, these equilibria can be observed in dilute solution by means of absorption spectra when species A and C possess different characteristics (24). For example, benzothiazolium and benzoxazolium in methanol and ethanol give at 10 mole liter 8 and 54% of the alkoxy derivatives for the former and 29 and 90% for the latter respectively. [Pg.32]

When applied to the synthesis of ethers the reaction is effective only with primary alcohols Elimination to form alkenes predominates with secondary and tertiary alcohols Diethyl ether is prepared on an industrial scale by heating ethanol with sulfuric acid at 140°C At higher temperatures elimination predominates and ethylene is the major product A mechanism for the formation of diethyl ether is outlined m Figure 15 3 The individual steps of this mechanism are analogous to those seen earlier Nucleophilic attack on a protonated alcohol was encountered m the reaction of primary alcohols with hydrogen halides (Section 4 12) and the nucleophilic properties of alcohols were dis cussed m the context of solvolysis reactions (Section 8 7) Both the first and the last steps are proton transfer reactions between oxygens... [Pg.637]

Pure adiponitrile is a colorless Hquid and has no distinctive odor some properties are shown in Table 5. It is soluble in methanol, ethanol, chloroalkanes, and aromatics but has low solubiUty in carbon disulfide, ethyl ether, and aUphatic hydrocarbons. At 20°C, the solubiUty of adiponitrile in water is ca 8 wt % the solubiUty increases to 35 wt % at 100°C. At 20°C, adiponitrile dissolves ca 5 wt % water. [Pg.220]

Supercritical Extraction. The use of a supercritical fluid such as carbon dioxide as extractant is growing in industrial importance, particularly in the food-related industries. The advantages of supercritical fluids (qv) as extractants include favorable solubiHty and transport properties, and the abiHty to complete an extraction rapidly at moderate temperature. Whereas most of the supercritical extraction processes are soHd—Hquid extractions, some Hquid—Hquid extractions are of commercial interest also. For example, the removal of ethanol from dilute aqueous solutions using Hquid carbon dioxide... [Pg.70]

Factor VIII, immunoglobulin, and albumin are all held as protein precipitates, the first as cryoprecipitate and the others as the Cohn fractions FI + II + III (or FII + III) and FIV + V (or FV), respectively (Table 7, Fig. 2). Similarly, Fractions FIVj + FIV can provide an intermediate product for the preparation of antithrombin III and a-1-proteinase inhibitor. This abiUty to reduce plasma to a number of compact, stable, intermediate products, together with the bacteriacidal properties of cold-ethanol, are the principal reasons these methods are stiU used industrially. [Pg.531]

Properties. Nickel sulfate hexahydrate [10101 -97-0], NiSo 6H20 is a monoclinic emerald-green crystalline salt that dissolves easily in water and in ethanol. When heated, it loses water and above 800°C decomposes into nickel oxide and SO3. Its density is 2.03 g/cm. ... [Pg.9]

Oxidizing Properties. Nitric acid is a powerful oxidizing agent (electron acceptor) that reacts violentiy with many organic materials (eg, turpentine, charcoal, and charred sawdust) (19,20). The concentrated acid may react explosively with ethanol (qv). Such oxidizing properties have had military appHcation nitric acid is used with certain organics, eg, furfuryl alcohol and aniline, as rocket propellant (see Explosives AND PROPELLANTS). [Pg.39]

Properties. o-Nitiotoluene [88-72-2] is a clear yeUow liquid. The solid is dimorphous and the melting points of the a- and P-forms ate —9.55 and —3.85 C, respectively. o-Nitrotoluene is infinitely soluble in benzene, diethyl ether, and ethanol. It is soluble in most organic solvents and only slightly soluble in water (0.065 g in 100 g of water at 30°C). The physical properties of o-nitrotoluene are hsted in Table 9. [Pg.68]

Nitrotoluene [99-99-0] crystallizes in colorless rhombic crystals. It is only slightly soluble in water, 0.044 g/100 g of water at 30°C moderately soluble in methanol and ethanol and readily soluble in acetone, diethyl ether, and benzene. The physical properties of -nitrotoluene are Hsted in Table 11. [Pg.69]
