Typical nonsieve, polar adsorbents are siUca gel and activated alumina. Kquilihrium data have been pubUshed on many systems (11—16,46,47). The order of affinity for various chemical species is saturated hydrocarbons < aromatic hydrocarbons = halogenated hydrocarbons < ethers = esters = ketones < amines = alcohols < carboxylic acids. In general, the selectivities are parallel to those obtained by the use of selective polar solvents in hydrocarbon systems, even the magnitudes are similar. Consequendy, the commercial use of these adsorbents must compete with solvent-extraction techniques. [Pg.292]

Aqueous mineral acids react with BF to yield the hydrates of BF or the hydroxyfluoroboric acids, fluoroboric acid, or boric acid. Solution in aqueous alkali gives the soluble salts of the hydroxyfluoroboric acids, fluoroboric acids, or boric acid. Boron trifluoride, slightly soluble in many organic solvents including saturated hydrocarbons (qv), halogenated hydrocarbons, and aromatic compounds, easily polymerizes unsaturated compounds such as butylenes (qv), styrene (qv), or vinyl esters, as well as easily cleaved cycHc molecules such as tetrahydrofuran (see Furan derivatives). Other molecules containing electron-donating atoms such as O, S, N, P, etc, eg, alcohols, acids, amines, phosphines, and ethers, may dissolve BF to produce soluble adducts. [Pg.160]

Sodium (metal). Used as a fine wire or as chips, for more completely drying ethers, saturated hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons which have been partially dried (for example with calcium chloride or magnesium sulfate). Unsuitable for acids, alcohols, alkyl halides, aldehydes, ketones, amines and esters. Reacts violently if water is present and can cause a fire with highly flammable liquids. [Pg.28]

Saturated hydrocarbons (waxes), fatty acids, metal soaps, fatty acid amides and esters (primarily Cig-Cis) act as internal lubricants, fluoro elastomers as external lubricants. Many other polymer additives, e.g. antistatic agents, antifogs, antioxidants, UV stabilisers, etc., act as lubricants in the barrel of the extruder once they are in the liquid form. [Pg.781]

The reaction described is of considerable general utility for the preparation of benzoyloxy derivatives of unsaturated hydrocarbons.2"8 Reactions of 2-butyl perbenzoate with various other classes of compounds in the presence of catalytic amounts of copper ions produce benzoyloxy derivatives. Thus this reaction can also be used to effect one-step oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons,9, 10 esters,6,11 dialkyl and aryl alkyl ethers,12 14 benzylic ethers,11,15 cyclic ethers,13,16 straight-chain and benzylic sulfides,12, 17-19 cyclic sulfides,11,19 amides,11 and certain organo-silicon compounds.20... [Pg.97]

Cholesterol as well as unsaturated or saturated hydrocarbon chains are used as lipophilic lipid anchors. Although Cl 8-hydrocarbon chains (oleoyl or oleyl unit) are only used in unsaturated compounds, structural variations with C14-, C16-, or even Cl 8-hydrocarbon chains in saturated compounds are known (27). The lipophilic units are linked with a parent structure (usually glycerol) via ether (e.g., DOTMA) or ester bridges (e.g., DOTAP). Ester bridges are often used to create the linkage to avoid cytotoxicity, because ether bonds are more difficult to break down biologically than ester bonds (58). Substances that are easy to decompose and are therefore often used as a spacer are carbamate units (29) [e.g., 3p-[A-(A, A -dimethylaminoethyl)carbamoyl]-cholesterol (DC-Chol)], amide units, or phosphate esters. However, a direct correlation between toxicity and the... [Pg.257]

Various classes of compoimds are not represented in recotmnended regression equations for estimating IQc values because experimentally determined Koc values are not available. These classes of compoimds include, but are not hmited to, alcohols, aldehydes, esters, ether, saturated hydrocarbons, and ketones. Generally, these types of compounds are very soluble in water (i.e., mg/L or... [Pg.18]

Ethers are saturated hydrocarbons with an oxygen atom in the center and are closely related to acetals. They have high hydrolytic and biological stability relative to esters and acetals, which were frequently used in the past as components of drilling muds. Their chemical stability improves their technical properties, but their low biodegradability leads to poor environmental performance [8]. [Pg.312]

Alcohols and esters, made not from olefins, but from saturated hydrocarbons in this case, pentanes, were next on the scene, with the production in 1926 of amyl alcohol by chlorination and caustic hydrolysis. And shortly thereafter thfe intentional chlorination of ethylene was undertaken to expand the output of ethylene dichloride, formerly obtained as a by-product of glycol manufacture. [Pg.290]

Chromic acid oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons starts with hydrogen abstraction to give a caged radical pair.113,114 The collapse of the latter leads to a chromium(IV) ester, which hydrolyzes to the product tertiary alcohol. The postulation of the caged pair was necessary to explain the high degree of retention in oxidation of (+)-3-methylheptane 113... [Pg.438]

Insects make unsaturated as well as saturated hydrocarbons. The former as well as long-chain alcohols and their esters often form the volatile pheromones with which insects communicate. Thus, the female pink bollworm attracts a male with a sex pheromone consisting of a mixture of the cis,cis and cis, trans isomers of 7,11-hexadecadienyl acetate,13 and European corn borer males are attracted across the cornfields of Iowa by czs-ll-tetradecenyl acetate.14 Addition of a little of the trans isomer makes the latter sex attractant much more powerful. Since more than one species uses the same attractant, it is possible that the males can distinguish between different ratios of isomers or of mixtures of closely related substances. [Pg.382]

On comparing the chemical composition of hydrocarbons and fatty oils, a certain parallelism between these two groups of products is found. Actually the difference is only due to the presence of a relatively small amount of oxygen in the esters. Thus, in principle, the structural analysis of fatty acid derivatives can be carried out by removing the oxygen and transforming the products into saturated hydrocarbons of... [Pg.87]

Quantitative changes in lipid compounds on the silk and cuticle of females correlate significantly with changes in female sexual receptivity in spiders. For example, female T. atrica attach a contact sex pheromone to their web (Trabalon et al., 1997,2005 Prouvost et al., 1999). This pheromone consists of a complex mixture of saturated hydrocarbons, methyl esters (methyl tetradecanoate, methyl pentadecanoate, methyl hexadecanoate, and methyl octadecanoate) and their fatty acids (tetradecanoic, pentadecanoic, hexadecanoic, and cis,cis-9,12-octadecadienoic acids). The female uses cuticular compounds, which are applied to the silk in substantial amounts during web construction. Modification of chemical profiles makes the female attractive to males (Trabalon et al., 2005). Receptive females are different to unreceptive ones with respect to three fatty acids (hexadecanoic, octadeca-dienoic and octadecenoic acids) and three methyl esters (linoleate, oleate, and stearate) present on both the web and the cuticle. Our combined results from chemical analyses and behavioral assays demonstrate clearly that these contact compounds are quantitatively correlated with the behavior of spiders. [Pg.353]

The threshold limits of chemical compounds can lie over a range of 10 orders of magnitude or more (Table 13-3). The saturated hydrocarbons and organic solvents have high threshold limits and are as a consequence relatively odorless. Esters of acrylic acid and a,fl-unsaturated ketones and aldehydes belong to intensive aroma compounds. [Pg.409]
