The flow behavior of the polymer blends is quite complex, influenced by the equilibrium thermodynamic, dynamics of phase separation, morphology, and flow geometry [2]. The flow properties of a two phase blend of incompatible polymers are determined by the properties of the component, that is the continuous phase while adding a low-viscosity component to a high-viscosity component melt. As long as the latter forms a continuous phase, the viscosity of the blend remains high. As soon as the phase inversion [2] occurs, the viscosity of the blend falls sharply, even with a relatively low content of low-viscosity component. Therefore, the S-shaped concentration dependence of the viscosity of blend of incompatible polymers is an indication of phase inversion. The temperature dependence of the viscosity of blends is determined by the viscous flow of the dispersion medium, which is affected by the presence of a second component. [Pg.611]

To build a molecular model of the equilibrium between a liquid and its vapor we first suppose that the liquid is introduced into an evacuated closed container. Vapor forms as molecules leave the surface of the liquid. Most evaporation takes place from the surface of the liquid because the molecules there are least strongly bound to their neighbors and can escape more easily than those in the bulk. Howevei as the number of molecules in the vapor increases, more of them become available to strike the surface of the liquid, stick to it, and become part of the liquid again. Eventually, the number of molecules returning to the liquid each second matches the number escaping (Fig. 8.2). The vapor is now condensing as fast as the liquid is vaporizing, and so the equilibrium is dynamic in the sense introduced in Section 7.11 ... [Pg.431]

Like all chemical equilibria, this equilibrium is dynamic and we should think of protons as ceaselessly exchanging between HCN and H20 molecules, with a constant but low concentration of CN and H30+ ions. The proton transfer reaction of a strong acid, such as HCl, in water is also dynamic, but the equilibrium lies so strongly in favor of products that we represent it just by its forward reaction with a single arrow. [Pg.516]

Equilibrium Systems. Magda et al (12.) have carried out an equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulation on a 6-12 Lennard-Jones fluid In a silt pore described by Equation 41 with 6 = 1 with fluid particle Interactions given by Equation 42. They used the Monte Carlo results of Snook and van Me gen to set the mean pore density so that the chemical potential was the same In all the simulations. The parameters and conditions set In this work were = 27T , = a, r = 3.5a, kT/e = 1.2, and... [Pg.270]

Collisions between NO2 molecules produce N2 O4 and consume NO2. At the same time, fragmentation of N2 O4 produces NO2 and consumes N2 O4. When the concentration of N2 O4 is veiy low, the first reaction occurs more often than the second. As the N2 O4 concentration increases, however, the rate of fragmentation increases. Eventually, the rate of N2 O4 production equals the rate of its decomposition. Even though individual molecules continue to combine and decompose, the rate of one reaction exactly balances the rate of the other. This is a dynamic equilibrium. At dynamic equilibrium, the rates of the forward and reverse reactions are equal. The system is dynamic because individual molecules react continuously. It is at equilibrium because there is no net change in the system. [Pg.1137]
