What is dynamic equilibrium

Dynamic equilibrium is an important and powerful concept in many areas of science. Dynamic [Pg.249]

A feature of reversible reactions is that they often appear to be static, as if there were no change occurring. This state of affairs is illusory. Reactants are continuously being consumed and regenerated by the forward and backward reactions. If no change seems to be taking place, it is because the rates of the reactions in each direction are balanced. In this case, the system is said to be in equilibrium. At equilibrium, reactant and product are continuously being formed and consumed, and the rate of the forward reaction is the same as the rate of the reverse reaction. This feature is the key to the importance of dynamic equilibrium. [Pg.250]
