All of the experiments in pure and mixed SSME systems, as well as in the Af-stearoyltyrosine systems, have one common feature, which seems characteristic of chiral molecular recognition in enantiomeric systems and their mixtures enantiomeric discrimination as reflected by monolayer dynamic and equilibrium properties has only been detected when either the racemic or enantiomeric systems have reverted to a tightly packed, presumably quasi-crystalline surface state. Thus far it has not been possible to detect clear enantiomeric discrimination in any fluid or gaseous monolayer state. [Pg.98]

The search for relationships among the dynamic and equilibrium properties of related series of compounds has been a paradigm of chemists for many years. The discovery of such unifying principles and predictive relationships has practical benefits. Numerous relationships exist among the structural characteristics, physicochemical properties, and/or biological qualities of classes of related compounds. Perhaps the best-known attribute relationships are the correlations between reaction rate constants and equilibrium constants for related reactions commonly known as linear tree-energy relationships (LFERs). The LFER concept led to the broader concepts of QSARs, which seek to predict the environmental fate of related compounds based on correlations between their bioactivity or physicochemical properties and structural features. For example, therapeutic response, environmental fate, and toxicity of organic compounds have been correlated with... [Pg.134]

Of central interest to the study of clusters is information on both dynamic and equilibrium properties of the systems. Dynamic properties such as diffusion coefficients can be used to investigate solidlike to liquidlike phase transitions as the cluster temperatures are varied. Equilibrium thermodynamic properties are of great utility in identifying cluster stability. Further-... [Pg.139]

The rates of Ca + dissociation of the above enzymes and proenzymes have been measured by " Ca NMR and stopped-flow techniques, " and are collected in Table 3.4. We note that the values of on and koff are generally much smaller than in the intracellular regulatory EF-hand proteins discussed in Section VI. Whereas the latter have dynamic and equilibrium properties similar to those of flexible low-molecular- weight chelators such as EDTA and EGTA, the serine proteases are more similar to the more-rigid cryptates, such as the macrobicyclic amino cryptate [2.2.2] (see Tables 3.2 and 3.4). [Pg.152]

Zhao et al. describe the concepts and mathematical foundations for PARIS II software that designs solvent mixtures based on optimal solvent properties. The solvent property categories include performance requirements and environmental requirements (a VOC index and an environmental impacts index), and are based on general, dynamic, and equilibrium properties. The chapter by Nelson contains... [Pg.5]
